Budget (including currency): 1000-1,500 USD

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Virtualization

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

So I am thinking about setting up a server in a datacenter for virtualization mainly. But I am in a budget and I have no clue where to start/ what suggestions you might have

I have found so far: server monkey.com , rack servers.com and https://unixsurplus.com/new-quanta-qs2b-b-10-bay-sff-d51b-1u-sas-3-3008-chipset-e5-2667v3/

I would generally need:

200 Watt power

128GB Ram DDR3 or DDR4 (but definitely expandable to 256GB or 512)

An AMD Processor? Maybe Intel? What do you suggest?

2TB NVMe SSD or more?

1Gbps dual NIC

I hope you could help me out here :)

Best Regards!

Hey I did some colocation  recently. I wend with a asrock rack system with the am4 board in it, and a 3900x. Its working great now.

What drives do you want to use in it?

What cpus do you plan on using in that server, those get over 200w really quickly, so you probalby want the L skus.

200 watt PSU ? more like 2000 watt  and you will need 10Gps not 1.  Do you know what you want to do with it ?

Just some NVMe SSD's with some nice performance (10Gbps reads and writes)

Speaking about CPU's I was thinking Intel E-2200 series

Not sure if this is way over the budget? Or TDP?

I can not go over 200Watt as power in DC's is very expensive. That is one of the limitations sadly.

Yes I want to use it for web hosting and virtualization of VPS's. 1Gbps is enough as, again, 10Gbps internet connectivity on a DC is very very expensive. So to reduce the budget I think it is better to limit to 1Gbps

This one looks just perfect, what do you think?

I see you are confused.  A server won't have only 200watt PSU. 10Gbps is for local access nothing to do with internet.

I have it coloacted right now. Faster cpu, about the same cost, might bo over budget, but both of these are limited to 128gb of ram.

If you want more ram, Id put the low power chips into a server like a dell r630.

This server is colocated, so the 200w limit is from the dc, nothing you can do without paying much more.

If you coloated a single server, there isn't a lan you connect to, just a wan. so 10gbe won't be useful as you don't have that fast of a wan link.

Oh I see, but a 10Gbps connection would make no sense as it is a single node. And yes you are right about the PSU I confused it with power usage.

Where did you buy it?

P.D. I think this one might be cheaper https://unixsurplus.com/new-quanta-qs2b-b-10-bay-sff-d51b-1u-sas-3-3008-chipset-e5-2667v3/

Although a worse CPU, it has DDR4 Ram included and I would just need to pay for the M.2 drives (NVMe SSD's)

Are you sure you don't need fast LAN ? you won't have to access files or databases somewhere else ? or on a NAS ? on the same network ?

Not for now. I will in the future add an internal network but that would require buying more U space and power and so on. The bill would just skyrocket.

In the future I am planing 40Gbps connections with kind of "cloud servers" so one server does storage, another does Ram and another does CPU. But that is still a couple years from now!

Id probably get a dell or hp or lenovo as the remote managemente is better, and there normally just built better.

What cpus would you use, that server didn't have any included.

Have you done colocation? You don't really have a lan with a single colocated server.

colocation is just a fancy name for renting space in a data center.
