AMD cooler doesn't fit in screw holes

What cooler? It didn't by chance come with the latch mechanism or adapter for mobo holes?

if its the stock AM4 wraith stealth/spire coolers, you gotta remove the 2 black plastic bars that come on the motherboard

 

 

if you have removed them, you also need to still have the backplate on the other side of the motherboard to screw into.

To add to this, AM4 coolers are rectangular. I don't know if they've tried rotating the cooler 90 degrees or not.

it's off but it doesn't screw in do I need the backplate?

yes, you need the backplate.

Shouldn't. My Noctua just screws into the factory backplate. It uses plastic spacers for Intel or AMD.

the backplate is still there, that's why it has threaded posts in the holes (they are attached to the backplate)
