Low frames with 1080ti, weak(er) cpu.

Okay so recently I found a really good deal on a desktop online that I couldn't pass up. For the curious I paid $650 for an ATX tower, complete with a corsair 750w, gskill 8x2, Pentium g5400, and a GTX 1080Ti founders edition with an evga hybrid liquid cooler. I mostly use this rig for tycoon/sim type games, or less demanding applications like clone hero, hotline miami, etc. However. I do like to stream from time to time, and it seems most people like watch Warzone. I enjoy CoD, but when running it on my setup, I usually only run about 40-50 fps on max(ish) settings. Also, when streaming, I seem to drop frames like crazy. I figured it definitely has to do with my underpowered CPU, and to further confirm my suspicions, the dropped frames issue seems to have been alleviated after enabling hardware encoding on OBS.

Anyway. Here's my main question. Would upgrading my CPU help my frame rate dilemma in warzone and other high demand games? Cyberpunk seems to struggle as well.

Pentium G5400: 2 cores, 4 threads, 3.7 GHz. That's probably below the minimum for modern games. On the plus side, as it is Coffee Lake generation you could probably upgrade it.

Find out what motherboard is in it. If unsure run CPU-Z and look on the motherboard tab. Then you can check what it is compatible with. Maybe it needs a firmware update also, but hopefully you can then replace the CPU with a higher one in the range which will help out a lot. Possibly cooling may be needed to be upgraded. What cooler is in there?

Have you tried streaming with NVENC? It will use the encoder in the GPU instead, as opposed to the hardware encoder's use of the iGPU

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

That motherboard supports 8th and 9th gen CPUs up to the 9900K and variations, so you likely only need to get a CPU, possibly upgrade cooler, and enjoy much better performance. How rich do you feel?

It's a dual core CPU that I think is a bigger problem even with GPU offloading of the encoding.

Sorry if I wasn't clear or if I said the wrong thing. When I "enabled hardware encoding" that is what I meant. Under the respective setting, I selected NVENC. Or maybe it was NVENC (New). Honestly I wasn't sure what the difference was, but after attempting to stream Rocket League after making that change, the dropped frames issue went away. Haven't tried it with anything heavier yet.

Z370M DS3H (rev. 1.0) Support | Motherboard - GIGABYTE U.S.A.

These are the CPUs compatible with that motherboard based on BIOS updates.  Im not versed on this mobo but based on the DS3H history it probably has weak VRMs so I would not try an i9 on it 😉

I see. There are multiple hardware selections last I recall in the OBS settings.

If the GPU encoders still aren't doing it, a few more cores probably will. I don't typically recommend an i5-8400 but for your purposes, one off eBay at the right price is probably a good call.

I was really wanting to move to AMD anyway lmao, an upgraded mobo was already on the shopping list and I prefer Ryzen CPUs for gaming

Rich enough for an AMD conversion 🥴 definitely not looking for a 9th gen upgrade though. I'll be content with an R7 🙂

the 5800x will be very good for streaming, and the performnce will be better, though you can get away with the 5600x

was asking about the upgrade. If your planning to get a 5600x, 5800X, or any Zen 2 CPU then the B550-A PRO is a great choice for 130 USD

So, would the g5400 be affecting my systems framerate capabilities for heavier load applications?

Given how easy it could be just to drop in a better CPU to the system you have is it not a consideration at all? I wouldn't buy a new CPU for it, but see what's available used where you are, there could be an easy upgrade path there.

A new current gen Ryzen system of course would perform a bit better but you are paying for that. If you want it for the other platform features then it makes more sense.

For sure it will be. It is a dual core which has dropped below the recommendations for much modern gaming. This is why I think a quick upgrade for you is to get a used 8th or 9th gen CPU depending on what's available. 6 cores would be quite nice.

A simple CPU replacement is a consideration considering the ease of upgrade and low cost, however I love to build, and part of me wants a new project. Small as it would be. I bought this system used, and would love to 'make it mine' ya know? I don't mind the premium for new parts, but depending on what I can do financially, a simple used swap out is on the table.

I totally get that. Different people have different goals. I read it as you wanted better performance, and a CPU replacement seemed to be the easiest way to get that. If you want to go new, that's certainly an option and you get new features like PCIe 4.0. Either way, a better CPU will significantly improve your experience.
