Is it worth upgrading or just throw it away?

Budget: $300 AUD

Country: Australia

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Simple web browsing and watching videos on web.

Other details:

Intel Celeron J1800 @2.41GHz

Bay Trail - D 22nm Technology

4GB RAM (8 GB Max that can be installed altogether)

500 GB Western Digital WDC WD5000AAKX-60U6AA0 (SATA ) Hard Drive

There's no SSD ( I think getting an SSD is important if I'm going to keep this Desktop)

BenQ G2000W (1680x1050@60Hz)

Currently on Windows 10

The desktop is owned by my Grandparents I want to try to upgrade it so they can at least web search with any lag. I know this system is rubbish and it's no surprise why it lags. Is it worth upgrading it such as increasing the RAM to 8GB and installing a decent SSD? I can open up the desktop myself so no service fees are needed.

Yes, for browsing it just ok.

Upgrade the memory to 8gb and 128gb ssd should be enough.

Nothing fancy, get a cheap kingston or sandisk.

It's not worth it to spend more.

You'll find it perform better afterwards.

Installing the SSD and getting the 8gb of ram should make that machine a good web browser.

I will recommend an NHu12s (or an NHd15 (maybe)) for your PC build. Quote or @ me @Prodigy_Smit for me to see your replies.

Not sure if this is relevant in your case but many of the older generations are not as computer literate as some so perhaps in addition to the minor upgrade some focused pointers like not leaving browser windows/tabs open if they are not needed will help smooth their usage too.

That said I would have also gone with the upgrades suggested above, very  cost effective for your use case.
