I want to upgrade RAM but people give me 2 diffrent answers

podkall
Go to solution Solved by whm1974,

OK I'm thinking that @podkall simply needs to have someone explain what is DDR and the same for Dual Channel. So I'm going to do this.

DDR stands for Double Data Rate, which is a type of memory that provides more Bandwidth then the Memory Standard at the time.

Dual Channel use two Memory Modules to provide double the Bandwidth available to the CPU. On Motherboards with four Memory Slots, install one in the First Slot, and the other in the Third.

Most CPUs only use Dual Channel. However HEDT Processors use Quad Channel.

I want to upgrade to 16GB RAM because higher is too expensive.

Currently I have 8GB (4+4)

And the plan was to buy 16GB RAM because some time later I can buy another one to make it 32.

Some say I should just buy the 16GB RAM and others say I should buy 16GB kit 8+8GB, because dual channel is faster..

One way is more expensive and removes the easy upgrade potential for more speed.

Other one sacrifices speed but costs less and you can upgrade easier and cheaper.

How much good is dual channel? What exactly does it speed up? (does it increase fps?)

Is it worth the money for someone who doesn't care if he has 120 fps or 140 fps because his monitor is only 64Hz?

What do you think? I have hard time choosing between 2 options if the details are not deep...

The reasons are many for going dual channel. But I will just say one:

* if you get 1 stick of 16gb ram now and wait to upgrade in 5 years in such a long time you may chances are that you will not be able to find a matching pair or the prices of DDR4 will be high since it will be old and hard to find. Same thing happens now with DDR2, DDR2 prices are crazy.

You have DDR3 memories which are here for more than 9 years still affordable and cheap, prob. cheaper than before..

Why would the price increase on DDR4?

As @HairlessMonkeyBoy imferred - there's no point elaborating because you seem to have started this topic to get others to reinforce what you're going to do anyway.

Ask advice because you DON'T know what to do... not because you want someone else to confirm YOUR decision.

What???

I still don't know what EXACTLY does the dual channel speed up, what is it good for, what's it better than single channel other than "it's faster" "it's more efficient"

Does it give more fps? Will it transfer files faster? faster Download? faster Upload? faster Render? Faster calculation of fotons in Hadron Particle Collider?

Nobody in here is clear "why" everyone is just saying "do it this was because its faster"

Well you can do as your please its your laptop, your money your choice. In 5 years you maybe NOT be able to find a stick of ram with compatible specs with the one you will get now.

Ideally you need same brand, same speed, same latency etc

Don't worry I won't, thanks for the precautions.

When I said 5 years I didn't mean literally 5 years, 5 years is like a maximum time.

Granted it's a 7yo video, but it's still as valid today as it was then.
From the Master himself:

I don't doubt he's made newer versions either...

I frequently edit any posts you may quote; please check for anything I 'may' have added.

Did you test boot it, before you built in into the case?

WHY NOT...?!

If you are not happy with the answers you can always do your own research. You don't have to wait to be fed all the knowledge. Google is your friend its not like in the olden days that you have to go to the library and read actual books. Information today is instant

I can't see why He wouldn't be. I explain exactly what Dual Channel is. I also do this quite simply without going into unnecessary Details...

This just makes me laugh...

Anyway, @podkall:

Dual channel is better because it gives your processor twice the RAM bandwidth. This is better for pretty much anything, whether it be web browsing, gaming, video editing, etc.

Can I ask you a question, OP? What do you think you might need 32GB of RAM for in the future? Without trying to be rude, you sound like you don't know enough about computers to know what specific applications even require that much RAM. Saying you want to upgrade again in ~5 years is oddly specific, and yet just vague enough to mean nothing.

Primary Gaming Rig:

I might start uding Blender, I might upgrade to RTX 3080, I might get i7/9 or Threadripper or something I might do it sooner than 5 years sooner than 2.., my way of getting money is slowly acumulating it I don't have job not even small job, nothing...
