I want to upgrade RAM but people give me 2 diffrent answers

OK I'm thinking that @podkall simply needs to have someone explain what is DDR and the same for Dual Channel. So I'm going to do this.

 

DDR stands for Double Data Rate, which is a type of memory that provides more Bandwidth then the Memory Standard at the time.

 

Dual Channel use two Memory Modules to provide double the Bandwidth available to the CPU. On Motherboards with four Memory Slots, install one in the First Slot, and the other in the Third.

 

Most CPUs only use Dual Channel. However HEDT Processors use Quad Channel.

 

I want to upgrade to 16GB RAM because higher is too expensive.

 

Currently I have 8GB (4+4)

 

And the plan was to buy 16GB RAM because some time later I can buy another one to make it 32.

 

Some say I should just buy the 16GB RAM and others say I should buy 16GB kit 8+8GB, because dual channel is faster..

 

One way is more expensive and removes the easy upgrade potential for more speed.

 

Other one sacrifices speed but costs less and you can upgrade easier and cheaper.

 

How much good is dual channel? What exactly does it speed up? (does it increase fps?)

 

Is it worth the money for someone who doesn't care if he has 120 fps or 140 fps because his monitor is only 64Hz?

 

What do you think? I have hard time choosing between 2 options if the details are not deep...

If you actually plan on upgrading in the future, I would just buy the single stick of 16Gb right now. If you don't see yourself upgrading for awhile, might be worth it to just get the two 8Gb sticks.

Always, always, ALWAYS use a dual channel memory configuration. Either save your money and buy the 32GB kit now if you really think you need it, or get the 16GB kit and upgrade later at greater expense.

I believe it's better to buy the single 16GB because my Motherboard supports maximum 32GB of Memory.

Why why WHY do I need dual channel memory configuration? Does using single config make me go from 100 fps to 1? Is it gonna throttle my PSU? Is it going to prevent me from taking my dog for a walk?

yea I'm not sure I agree with Kid.Lazer for this case. Yes it is better performance wise, but he did state he doesn't NEED to be at the edge of performance for his case.

If you want optimum performance from your system, ALWAYS use RAM in a dual-channel configuration; 1x 16GB will NOT perform as well as 2x 8GB.

Unless you know you can get 100% guarantee to get exactly the same 2x 8GB kit as the one you buy 'now' - at a later date - you're always better off getting however much RAM you want to use as a 2-stick kit.

 

Also; bear in mind that DDR4 may have been supplanted by (at least) DDR5 as mainstrteam in 5 years time... so you may not be able to add another 16GB that economically.

Did you test boot it, before you built in into the case?

Just get a kit of 2x8GB if you don't have a specific need for 32GB. Your system will benefit much more from dual channel.

OP - the advice in this thread is good.  I agree with:

 

Dual Channel is a must unless you hate yourself and dont mind driving around in a Ryzen 1 800 (this is typed on purpose)

 

With 4 DIMMS there is no upgrade path you currently have.  The 4x4 isnt an upgrade path unless you start getting into 8 DIMM workstations, then you wouldnt likely be using 4gb modules anyways.

 

Sometimes you just end up with extra RAM - sell it!

It's not 4 DIMMS it's 4GB per dimm it's 2 slots max on Motherboard

You will be using whatever single stick of RAM you choose to use in the machine at less than full speed for ALL of the machine's tasks... not JUST gaming.

While I won't say that single channel is the end all be all I will say its worth getting the dual channel kit now. If you need to upgrade to 32 gb in 5 years because your system requires it by that time you might as well upgrade your whole system and ddr5 would be mainstream making the idea of upgrading to 32 gbs of ddr4 ram pointless. And if you truly need 32gb of ram fairly soon from now then just buy a 2x16 gb kit now as they are fairly cheap right now.
