MSI MB EZ Debug LED VGA - no Screen shown - RTX3080 RIP?

Yaerox

build my new RIG on December 19th:

  • i9-10850K
  • MSI Gaming X Trio 3080
  • MSI MEG Z490 Unify
  • G.Skill Trident Z Neo DDR4-3600 DIMM CL16-19-19-39 Dual Kit
  • beQuiet Dark Pro 11 850W

BIOS Updated, set CPU Cooling on Air-Cooled (there was a dialog for the first BIOS start where I got asked about the cooling type). Activated XMP Profile 1. Didn't changed anything. No OC nothing. Rig worked fine from December 19th till Sunday. Waked up Sunday thought I'm gonna go for some fun games and got busted:

  • played WoW, Window suddenly disappeared. 5-10 Seconds later the Window returned.
  • Since then, I had Graphic-Glitches all over the game and the mentioned behavior before appeared more frequently.
  • Second Monitor went on/off all the time.
  • One time I got a Bluescreen.

I thought WoW is ripped, started COD then and had the same issues.
Via MSI Afterburner I tracked GPU Load, GPU Temp, Memory Clock, CPU Load, CPU Temp, Memory Usage, FPS and Frametimes. Everything was fine, temps were below 70°C. The only thing I noticed was Memory Clock. I assume Memory Clock is GPU Memory, since it's shown green on the OSD in Afterburner. This Memory Clock went aroud 9000/9500 MHz. Not sure if this is normal, never kept an eye on it before.

So I did:

  • Update nVidia Driver -> Same behavior
  • Fully reinstalled Windows -> While installing games (neuinst-windows.jpeg) again graphical issues (neuinst-windows2.jpeg). The green square in the middle is added by me to hidemy Account Name. Everything else was just the way it was on my screen. I couldn't change monitors because the second screen went on/off like 20 times and stayed off then.
  • Turned off the PC > unplug Power > reseat GPU -> No image. EZ Debug LED Mainboard: VGA lightning up. Repeated this step. Same result.

I thought may the PCIe slot is damaged?

  • Turned off the PC > unplug Power > changed RTX3080 with GTX970 -> PC running fine
  • Turned off the PC > unplug Power > changed GTX970 with RTX3080 -> No image. EZ Debug LED Mainboard: VGA lightning up.
  • Turned off the PC > unplug Power > changed RTX3080 with GTX970 -> PC running fine -> Reinstalled GPU Driver with DDU since the RTX 3080 Drivers were installed. Played games hours straight with not a single issue.

Since GTX970 is working totally fine with both display I'd say: Displays+Cables are fine. Same for the PCIe Slot.

Never moved the PC since build. It stayed under my desk working fine till Sunday. I really did nothing. I didn't installed or changed anything before shutting off on Saturday and I didn't installed or changed anything on Sunday.

Anyone any ideas? or do I have to RMA the GPU?

Those pink squares are graphical artifacts, usually faulty GPU Memory related, etc.

Damn this didn't cross the mind until now...but you already started the RMA....

Where did you buy the RTX 3090 from?

You are still within a 30-day period...depending on the retailer, you could just do an refund / exchange with the retailer / store.

If they are in the EU they can still do this after 30 days... it's called guarantee and lasts at least 2 years and it's actually the normal way to go, most people don't RMA here, you have a contract with the seller not the manufacturer, in most cases at least.

EU law also stipulates that you must give the consumer a minimum 2-year guarantee (legal guarantee) as a protection against faulty goods, or goods that don't look or work as advertised. In some countries national law may require you to provide longer guarantees.

Yeah already send the GPU back. Hope RMA request will be fine. I hope for a repair/exchange but I believe in case they accept the RMA I might just get my money back due to availability. Living in Germany.

Here Warranty means: First year is guarantee, reseller has to prove you did the damage - Second year is slightly different, you have to prove that you didn't do the damaged to the product. Most stores are really fine here. RMA for us is more like having the option for exchange/refund.
