CPU Heatsink lifted off during install. Do I need to re-apply thermal paste.

Hi there,

I was installing the Noctua NH-U12S and while screwing down, I had to adjust. During the unscrewing of one side, it popped off the CPU on one side. I then just screwed down again and all seems well. Should I have cleaned off the paste and started from scratch or will I be okay?

As long as you used enough paste, it'll be fine.

It will probably be fine. I don't always reapply thermal paste when I take my cooler off and temps are usually fine.

You don't have to but you'll likely have better temps with a more consistent application if you do.

 

If you really caked it on though, I wouldn't worry at all and even then I'd only consider redoing it if it's something higher power that really needs the cooling.

when it's new and it's paste it should be fine, so long it didn't get pushed off the CPU and into the motherboard.

if it's old, then it would be better to apply a new one, fresh ones can handle being messed around a bit.

Just don't eat it or use it for your teeth.
