Keep ps5 digital or try to get disc?

grillechese

Hello,

So, I just got a digital edition. (I got super lucky on PS Direct)

I haven't had a PlayStation since the PS2, I was wondering if it was worth it for me to get a disc version considering I don't have any PS4 games.

But there are alot of PS4 games that I want to play.

So the question I have is, should I worry about not having the disc version? Or will most of the big titles like God of War, ghost of tsushima, and others be available to play digitally?

Thanks,

A confused PC gamer that got a PS5

It really depends, used games are usually pretty cheap so if you don't need to have the newest games right away you can save few bucks there.

But bigger reason for discs is that eventually Sony will stop supporting PS5 playstation store, and in that case you're out of options without the blu-ray player. If you're going to sell the system once the new one comes out, it's not a problem.

Every PS4 game I can think of is available on PSN, unlike the PS3 for example where a lot of cult hits never got digital releases. To me the downside of digital is when you buy games the first few months they'll be full price on PSN but there is often a ton of competition among brick and mortars for physical game sales and the prices drop fast. However once a game is a year or two old PSN usually becomes the cheapest.

There is currently a sale going on that ends in a couple of days that has a few really strong PS4 exlcusives for good prices:

1. Bloodborne for $13 + The Old Hunters DLC for $10

https://store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP9000-CUSA00900_00-BLOODBORNE000000

https://store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP9000-CUSA00900_00-SPEXPANSIONDLC03

Bar none my favorite game on PS4. If you like the Souls games this is IMO the cream of the crop. Game does run at 30 fps even on PS5 and frame pacing can be lousy at times, but the combat is amazing and two of the boss fights in the DLC are the best I have played in any game.

2. Uncharted Nathan Drake Trilogy $10

https://store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP9000-CUSA02320_00-UNCHARTEDTRILOGY

60 fps 1080p remasters of the PS3 games. UC1 feels kind of old, mostly because of the controls, but UC2 and UC3 hold up pretty well IMO. If you like the Tomb Raider reboot these are pretty much the same game.

3. Persona 5 Royal Deluxe Edition for $35

https://store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP0177-CUSA17416_00-PERSONA5RDELUXE0

If you like turn based RPG and/or Japanese games, this is one of the best ever made. Great soundtrack, art style, interesting battles and dungeons, and it can be pretty funny at times too. Don't buy the original Persona 5 though, even free I don't think it's worth it vs $35 for the better version of the game. Mostly because the original Persona 5 is very tight on time because... your freaking cat makes you go to sleep early all the time instead of doing useful things. That has been way toned down in Persona 5 Royal, plus there are a lot of quality of life improvements in the game as well as a pretty interesting added storyline.

4. Ratchet & Clank $10

https://store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP2611-CUSA10454_00-DRAGONSCROWNPRO1

Surprisingly awesome platformer with a lot of fun weapons and attacks, and pretty impressive graphically. Runs at 30 fps but a lot of fun for $10.

5. Dragon's Crown Pro for $8

https://store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP2611-CUSA10454_00-DRAGONSCROWNPRO1

If you like 2D beat'em up kind of games this one is really cool. Amazing artwork.

There is also a new sale starting tomorrow that will hopefully have some of the other biggest PS4 exclusives for good prices, such as God of War, The Last of Us Remastered, Uncharted 4, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Shadow of the Colossus that often drop to $10 in sales. I doubt you see Ghost of Tsushima below $40 for a while but maybe we'll see The Last of Us Part II for $30 in this coming sale.
