So I have a situation, I want to get some input. Currently I have an Aorus 15G laptop (see specs below) and I received a free Dell XPS (see specs below). I am going to test the gaming capability on the XPS shortly and I assume the desktop version of the 1080 would most likely be the same or beat the 2070 super max q version of RTX, minus ray tracing and all. It is not like I can use ray tracing anyhow because it cripples the mobile 2070 to half the FPS in all games that support RT. Which Rig would you guys go with? Which ever one I choose to not use I am going to sell, whether that be the Aorus laptop or the XPS. I wanted to build a rig, but considering the market right now, this is the worst possible time. I also want to get rid of this laptop and start playing on a Desktop again. Oh and I only play on 1080P monitors with 240hz refresh.

1920 x 1080 Res, Aorus 15G, RTX OC'd to 6000MHZ on RAM, and 1975 on core

COD: I get 100-120 FPS with RT off , ultra settings. RT ON: 55-90 FPS

WOW ShadowLands: I get 70-100 Ultra settings (mostly 100, but when shit gets hairy, it dips to 70-80ish)

CS:GO: 250-300FPS Ultra settings

Half life Alyx: 50-90FPS VR on Medium settings

Tarkov: Unplayable, stutters like crazy. i get max 50-60FPS, with dips to 20-30

Thoughts on which one you would sell and or keep.

Currently have Aorus 15G gaming laptop

10th Gen I710875H 8c/16t

16GB 2933mhz DDR 4

RTX 2070 super max q

Dell XPS ( not tested yet)

8th Gen I7 8700 6c/12t

16GB 2666mhz

GTX 1080 FE

Unboxed the xps will probably get you more money, if both are unboxed the aorus will probably get you more.
I'd expect a small enough difference in performance that it's not worth worrying over

I absolutely despise gaming laptops

They're hot- so they throttle and run so much worse than they should

They're heavy

And they usually all have mediocre keyboards and trackpads

That was my logic as well. I do think the GTX 1080 FE would perform similar to the 2070 max q, if not a hair better in certain titles. I wish it was a 1080 Ti but it is not. Both are unboxed. The laptop has been used since June, the Dell XPS hasnt been used in over a year and has been sitting unused. I am anxious to see how the XPS performs with the same titles.

after switching from a "gaming" laptop to a desktop, i'd never go back, even if on paper the laptop would have better specs. as @Slottrsaid, they are hot, loud, have lots of brand crapware and drivers that half of the time don't work.

Perfect then!

However, I would sell the laptop- you can still get a good amount for it and two-three years down the line you wont

The desktop can be upgraded and changed to account for future performance changes

I paid $2200 for the aorus 15g, and have been trying to sell it for $1650 and I am struggling to get bites. This was before I had the XPS.

What my dad did (he has an HP Pavilion 15) is reinstall Windows completely from a USB stick and, about 3 weeks later, reapply thermal paste - his was more thermal pancake.

It still gets hot, but not nearly as much as before.

PLEASE STOP [Killing] ME I WILL GIVE Y OU ANOTHER DEAL.

I repasted the thermal paste once already on the Aorus 15g. Temps aren't bad on the GPU with fans at full blast 5700RPM, normally hits 75 tops. The cpu however, hits 90+ constantly. I was running XTU to see if it was thermal throttling, and it wasn't, but it was power throttling constantly.

Only downfall of this XPS is, the power supply sits in front of the CPU cooler (it swings away to get access to the CPU). I don't know if I would be able to get a better cooler for the CPU as the PSU is in the way for clearance. Although its not the 8700k version, so its not unlocked either so no OC'ing the CPU.
