Ryzen 5000 build - review my major rig upgrade

FreakyAlleyCat

Budget (including currency): 1200 € (= USD 1.463)

Country: Germany

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Non competitive gaming (1440p, mainly AAA-titles), music production (professionally), video production (casually)

Other details I'm planning on reusing my preexisting Palit 2070 Super (for now) plus the Samsung 970 evo m.2 drive and 860 Evo 2,5" SSD. Also LG 43GN850-B Display is already on it's way here.

So, i'm finally planning on upgrading my old Xeon e3 1231-v3 build to a new gen ryzen 5000. The rig will mainly be used for casual gaming of all sorts of story based titles (no competitive ffps gaming, although ffps never hurt) and for professional music and casual video production for my band (which is why i'm planning on going 8-core with the Ryzen 7 5800x).

I absolutely prefer smaller mATX builds, so i'm eagerly waiting on the new lian li o11 mini, which my heart is kinda dead set on. I'm also very interested in maybe going custom loop in the future, so this case looks like it's going to serve me fairly well for the next couple of years if thermals and noise turn out okay.

Since I tend to use the base system for quite a while (current one is in it's 6th year) and still regularily upgrade things like GPU and some smaller details i'd like to reuse my one year old 2070 Super and all my SSDs for now, so the 1200 € budget is meant for the entire new rig excluding GPU and storage.

Since I don't build new rigs more than once every six years, i'd like to ask you guys for some feedback on the following build.

The only thing i'm not too happy with right now is the fact that the mainboard has no usb-c header for the front panel.

Also the Galahad cooler is reviewed to be on the louder side of things but i couldn't really find any white alternatives?

pro4 should be just fine and is half the price

otherwise looks good except for maybe the GPU might be a small bottleneck

Your spending alot on a PSU. If you spend 150 - 200 you can afford a 5900x. Also you may want a slightly better mobo.

geometry is hard
b550 > x570

if you plan on a custom loop, don't get an expensive aio now.

invest that money towards a 5900x and a good cheap air cooler like the gelid phantom.

also the b550m steel legend is fine for the 5800x, but for the 5900x i'd go with the mortar

The PSU is to basically ensure I can upgrade to future GPUs when my 2070 Super is becoming outdated. Also the sf750 is reasonably priced here in europe. I've actually saved up the money for this build for over one and a half years now, so nope the logic "you've got the dough so go full blast" doesn't really apply here. With music and video production I can actually make use of 8 cores. But the 5900x is almost 350 € more expensive here in germany right now so this is definitely where I draw the line. :)

@boggy77 Thank you!! I've actually looked into the MSI b550m Mortar but i was going for a clean looking white/lightish build and the mortar just kinda put me off visually. Are there any serious advantages over the steel legend other than the usb-c header?

Thank you all for your input, this is helping a lot!!!

if you end up going for the 5900x, the mortar has better vrms that won't overheat with that cpu and will alow better boosting/overclocking

False alarm, missed that it was the MINI version of the case.

You mentioned being in Germany, so I'm unsure how the prices/availability are there.. but this $149.99 PSU is on sale from Newegg for $124.99 (literally just went on sale and ends on Thursday): https://www.newegg.com/super-flower-leadex-iii-sf-850f14hg-850w/p/1HU-024C-00005 .  Maybe worth checking out.

Lian Li o11 Mini only takes SFX power supplies. This one looks like a standard ATX, right?

That is correct; I missed the "mini" bit.

Ah, i see thank you!

Should also mention that i'm not really an overclocking guy. I just love the looks of custom cooled machines and like to fiddle around with tools and parts. :D
