Hi Folks, first time here.

I am generally capable building PC's... I've done it 5 times so I am not new to this. That said, this time around I am doing more new things. My last personal build was 6600K, and that thing just worked. I broke the rules even about closing the case before you post on that build. Well I broke that rule here too and now I am paying for it. Please help!

  • I've never used AMD CPU

  • I've never used RGB

So here's some parts:

  • Ryzen 5800X

  • Asus TUF Gaming G550 Plus

  • 32 GB DDR4 (Team Delta something RGB)

  • 1 TB WD Black NVME

  • EVGA G5 750W 80 Plus Gold

Assumptions:

  • CPU does not have graphics output so I will need a GPU installed to get any video output

  • I would need to update BIOS before getting anywhere

  • I should just be able to at least get case fans and PSU fan to turn on when I press the power button

  • Motherboard has CPU Fan and AIO headers... I assumed AIO header would be accurate and that must be plugged into either CPU or AIO for boot

Symptoms:

  • At first I suspected BIOS needed done first, with some challenge I managed to use Flashback on new BIOS version that was released this month

  • Motherboard RGB does light up

  • My case has RGB built in, does not light up

  • PSU light under power plug does light (no fan spin)

  • No case fans spin or light up

  • AIO does not light up or make any noise

  • Pressing power button on case seems to have no effect

  • Motherboard seems to have some LED indicators onboard near 20 PIN (none light up)

What I have not tried:

  • I have not plugged in a GPU, I assumed that it wasn't necessary to turn on

  • I haven't plugged a monitor into motherboard (does have HDMI and DP out)

  • I haven't, since BIOS flash, tried AIO power plugged back into AIO header. It is currently plugged into CPU fan header

What I have tried:

  • Re-seat RAM

  • Moved AIO power to CPU fan header

Questions:

  • My PSU is fully modular, does it matter what end of the cable connects to the peripheral or motherboard? (ie. 20 Pin has a split plug and a solid plug end)

    • Some plugs makes sense which end goes where. Like the SATA obviously goes one way.

    • Some plugs could connect either way, does that matter?

    • For CPU 20 Pin, there is a un-labeled 8 pin section next to CPU slot on PSU side, I assumed that is part of the 20 PIN section since it takes up that many pins to plug into it.

  • Will this PC boot with no GPU? I mean it should right?

  • Can anyone help me figure out what the issue might be?

TLDR:

I have built PC's before but this new gen AMD is giving me hell. I can't figure out how to get it to boot.

Just be be clear here, it won't turn on at all without the GPU? I mean not even the case fans will spin or any of that jazz?

Nope. AMD's 5000 series have no onboard graphics. Zero. None. Nada. You literally can't even get into BIOS without a GPU. As such, the system would not be able to boot with no video out. It's slightly interesting to me that AMD hasn't built in any prompt that says "hey go get a GPU", but I guess it wasn't deemed necessary.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

Got any questions about my system or peripherals? Feel free to tag me (@bellabichon) and I'll be happy to give you my two cents.

PSA: Posting a PCPartPicker list with no explanation isn't helpful for first-time builders :)

Dang, that is different! lol

Yes.

Also yes. Only very little boards come with bios support for the 5800x out of the box.

AIp ump has to be plugged in the "AIO" header and the aio fans to "Cpu_Fan" or " CpuOPT

Yes Ryzen 5800X will require a BIOS update, as OLD STOCK (e.g. boards made prior to Ryzen 5000-series launch) B550 motherboards do not support the Ryzen 5800X out of the box. Now, if you were to GET a board made within the last 1 ~ 2 months, it should support it right from the factory.

It looks like you got that part figured out.

  • You usually need something connected to the CPU_FAN header, otherwise system will think there is no heatsink.
    • AIO header is typically for the water pump.
    • AIO header can supply more current for the pump(s), otherwise, it is just like a regular fan header

  • If your CPU does not have any sort if Integrated Graphics (iGPU), you WILL NEED a graphics card.
    • This is the same for Intel CPUs that do not have iGPU (e.g. Intel Extreme platform CPUs on... X99 / LGA-2011-v3, or X299 / LGA 2066)
    • System wont make it past POST if no GPU is detected -- this ASUS TUF B550-PLUS should have the Q-LED indicators for reason for no boot
    • Q-LED are the debug LEDs pointed out by (20)

image.png.72a75b1155743f1c0d6b5cb2112793ba.png

  • The motherboard also supports APUs (have GPU on die), hence the HDMI / DP connectors on the motherboard.
    • The Ryzen 5800X CPU does not have a GPU on-die, so the HDMI / DP on the motherboard is rendered useless

  • Going to the COMPENENT SIDE (e.g. motherboard) should be a 24-pin (20 + 4) connection
    • The PSU side of the cable is NOT the same as the component end of the cable
    • Typically, that cannot be messed up, UNLESS you force it in, and damage the connectors

  • On the EVGA G5, it should be a 18 + 10 connection on the PSU side, and a 20+4 pin connection for the motherboard side

image.png.efa52390f1ce16668dd46a9314f052e4.png

  • The 8-pin CPU power connection that goes to the top-left side of the motherboard is REQUIRED
    • You need to use one of the modular cables that goes to either CPU1 or CPU2 on the PSU side
    • Either one is fine

Ok so Plugged fans on radiator into cpu fan header, AIO into AIO header. Out in a GPU, verified front panel connectors multiple times.

Board still lights up but nothing else happens. I’m really stumped here. All I expected was fans to turn on and I’m not even getting that far. Status LED’s on motherboard don’t turn on either.

I have the 20 pin and 8 pin cpu power plugged in btw. Any ideas?

I did that too on my very first build (partly in sig) it boot up first try!

*high five*

*on topic* did I understand this right, you have no gpu installed?  if so that's like 99% sure your issue, no bios, no nothing and a led warning will occur (because there's no gpu that means pc is not functional!)

Ok scratch that, since you now apparently have a gpu, reset CMOS.

Btw just in case (lol) iirc fans would very much turn on, still no output without gpu tho and you'd still get a "VGA" warning led most likely.

haha, that's crazy I guess, but nice you figured it out - and yeah that's one of these things that can be tricky cause you don't really think something simply like that could be the cause of your troubles... 🤔
