550 W PSU enough for a RX 5700 XT and Ryzen 5 3600?

Utilityblock367

hi, i had to switch my plans from an RTX 2060 super to an RX 5700 XT due to availability and such, although i might have made one small oversight, i only have an 550 w psu, and watching a video they mentioned this card is recommend a 600-750 w psu? will i have to return my psu and get a new one? or will i be okay? really nervous, first full PC build ever so im slightly new to this.

If it was a good 550W, sure, but the VS550 isn't, unfortunately.

Yeah, you should be ok. According to the newegg PSU calculator it consumes about 440 watts.

If it was a different 550W power supply, my answer might be a 'maybe', but the Corsair VS 2012 is a unit with a pretty sour reputation. In fact, it's even listed in "Tier E • Potentially dangerous in multiple scenarios" on the forum's PSU Tier List. I'd recommend you switch to something a little bit better reviewed, like the CXM 650W, or (if you have the cash) a much better model like the RMx 650W.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

Got any questions about my system or peripherals? Feel free to tag me (@bellabichon) and I'll be happy to give you my two cents.

PSA: Posting a PCPartPicker list with no explanation isn't helpful for first-time builders :)

Before making that recommendation, I'd suggest you look at some reviews of the VS 2012 series. It's, uh, not in the 'high end' to say the least.

yes on technicality, but all things point to that PSU not being able to be used if you decide to upgrade(or even with the components you currently have if they just sip a bit too much power).

CPU: Intel core i7-8086K Case: CORSAIR Crystal 570X RGB CPU Cooler: Corsair Hydro Series H150i PRO RGB Storage: Samsung 980 Pro - 2TB NVMe SSD PSU: EVGA 1000 GQ, 80+ GOLD 1000W, Semi Modular GPU: MSI Radeon RX 580 GAMING X 8G RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum 64GB (4 x 16GB) DDR4 3200mhz Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E Gaming

would the Cooler Master MWE Bronze 650 V2 PSU / PC voeding be a good one too? its the cheapest for that price but of course cheaper often means less quality

Since when will a 5700XT and 3600 "sip too much power" for a 550W PSU?

It's not about the wattage, it's about the quality. And if that's not even the newer 2018 VS, but the older yellow/orange label model, then that's just absolute garbage.

That's okay, miles ahead of the VS. I'd still take a better 550W unit over it, but it should work.

i think ill save up for the Cooler Master MWE Gold 750 Full Modular V2 PSU at 95 euros, only 10 euros more than the 650w version

Sounds good. Not that you need 750W, but I'd be comfortable hooking up a 5700XT to an MWE Gold.

Sure, it can't hurt.

I'd go for a CX550, better yet a CX550M for semi modularity. If you can spare a little extra, go for an RMx since they are fully modular and are FAR better than either of the previously mentioned units.
