Will a Corsair SF750 worth with an Aorus 3080 Xtreme?

adb1028

Gigabyte recommends 850w. I already have the PSU and the GPU is on it’s way. I don’t plan on much overclocking other than messing around in MSI afterburner. I’m pairing it with a 5600x (though I have a 5800x also, not sure which one I’m keeping yet).

Will 750w work? Also, how do I power the card? Looks like the psu has 2 VGA cables with 2 PCIE 8 pins on each end (4 total). Is it OK to use two 8 pins off on one connector on this PSU and a single 8 pin off of the other? Lots of conflicting info out there!!

thanks In advance

3080 has some serious power spikes.  Like, within milliseconds.  Normally, the secondary caps of the PSU have enough charge in them to buffer the spikes.  Not what they're made for, but it works.

Due to the small size of the SF750, there's fewer/smaller secondary capacitors and therefore minimal capacitance to buffer those spikes.  So the PSU shuts down.

So would the SF750 in theory not be suitable for ANY 3080?

If I run the Aorus 3080 Xtreme @ stock, do I still run the chance of having issues? Is it just not possible at all?

what would you recommend? I am using the new Lian Li o11 Mini which only accepts SFX power supplies.

thanks for the insight!

As far as I know NONE of the SFX PSUs actually work or do well with them.

If the peak power limit of the Aorus Xtreme is 470watts and the peak multi threaded load of a 5600x is ~150watts, that puts the system at around 620watts in the worse case scenario right? Shouldn’t that be fine considering it’s 750w platinum PSU? Are you saying the 3080 could spike even higher? Or am I missing something?

This is stuff I don’t really understand so thank you for explaining in layman’s terms!

If it's an AIB card with stock clocks, it will work.

That 470W "peak" is bogus.  The person reporting that is not capturing spikes with an oscilloscope.

Yes, they do work, a few on the EVGA forum running them with stock clocks, SF 750W.

So far, haven't heard back anything about problems yet..

so it WILL work then? As long as I don’t OC it?

The number is actually 450watt power limit, this is a number a got from Gigabytes website. Evidently there was a bios update for the 3080 Xtreme that raised the limit to 450watt.

i don’t know what that actually means, I just assumed it meant at stock settings it could potentially peak to 450watts

Right.  You have to factor in EVERYTHING.  Like what CPU you're using, etc.

Fortunately, you're only considering a 65W CPU, so you're probably ok.

Yeah, but that doesn't include the Power spikes that can be and are a lot higher.

Up to about double that.
