Is it normal for my CPU to reach 50 degrees Celsius when idle?

SKY42000

My laptop model is ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2

i7-9850H

GTX1650 with Max-Q Design

32GB / 1TB

I've attached a screenshot, when at idle, my CPU load is just 5%, but somehow the temperature keeps going above 50 degrees C. Both of the fans at the bottom of my laptop are spinning fine. I've already set my power options to maximum power saving with AC plugged in. Only chrome was running (to type this), antivirus was not updating or scanning. I've done some reading online and some said this is although not dangerous, neither normal tho, is this true?

Well, it is normal since your CPU is boosting to 4.3GHz when idle.... Which is wierd

As long as the load temps are fine you shouldn't really worry about it, though as mentioned in the first reply it's boosting to 4.3 when idle which isn't normal. Try putting it on the balanced power plan in windows settings.

CPU fan is n/a... that's weird and not good. But it seems like it's doing that with the GPU as well so NZXT problem (no temperature on the GPU either) ?

The AC plugged in sometimes supersedes the power saving features, and also makes the battery and stuff warm. Try unplug and see if it's better.

If it's turboing, then it's NOT idle. Try kill every background tasks, including the web browser and the NZXT program (use CPU-Z or something lightweight instead to check each core frequency).

Well, if you look on websites like Notebookcheck, even ~2% usage with applications like CPU-Z is all that is required on Intel systems to register clocks of 4GHz+, so that isn't unusual.

@BlueChinchillaEatingDorito And as to the CPU and GPU fan being n/a... It probably rather means that they are shut off due to low load and regular idle thermals, not due to the fans or any controller being defective. Basically every laptop nowadays has the option to disable its fan(s) during idle. Not to mention that it isn't the manufacturers original software (which is Lenovo Vantage), so it might not even be able to read proper thermals and fan speeds.

What I think has to be said about this device is that it isn't known to have the greatest cooler, so it will always run a bit hotter. I have a small Yoga 530-14ARR and the Ryzen 5 2500U barely idles below 45°C, so nothing is unusual about that. It is quite normal for a laptop to idle in the 40s and 50s.

The cpu clock rate just hops around between 800mHz and 4200mHz all the time and I can’t find out why

Normal. 50C is normal. I have 50C too with 360mm water cooler.

Clock jumping is also normal. There is soem backround app that uses your cpu for a brief time, during that time the cpu boosts.
