Ram running at half speed

Alex1011

Hello, I need help with my ram. For about a year now my ram (8GBx2) has been running 1333mhz when they are rated for 2666mhz. I have checked the bios and my bios says they should be using 2666mhz but when i check my task manager on my pc it says 1333mhz.

My system:

AMD Ryzen 2600X

8GBx2 Ballistix sport 2666mhz

Asus B450-F Gaming

What does CPU-Z say?

Are you running XMP (DOCP), bios default or manual memory settings?

1333MHz is the actual frequency, while 2666MHz (or rather MT/s) is the effective speed, hence the name DDR - Double Data Rate.

Pretty odd that Task Manager is showing it as that, but there's nothing wrong with it.

TL;DR: your RAM is running as it should now.

More info:

Mhz = millions of ticks per second.

DDR = Dual data rate

Your RAM runs at 1333 millions ticks per second, it's just that every tick the RAM can transfer two things, which results in 2666 millions of transfers per second, MT/s.

RAM advertised as "2666Mhz" actually runs at 1333Mhz, with 2666MT/s.

Memory advertising companies and your motherboard report back the 2666MT/s as "2666Mhz"

Software (like your OS and CPU-Z) report it back correctly; as 1333Mhz.

Double data rate (DDR) will almost always list half the rated speed since it doubles it.

The thing is that my friends who have 3200mhz memories it also shows 3200mhz in their task manager and i forgot to mention but my ram was running 2666mhz according to my task manager for the first 3 months of the install. After about three months they cut down to half and has been that way ever since.

I have been reading other forums aswell and most of them give the same answer as you. Maybe i just hallucinated when i saw 2666mhz lol

Ok you gave the same asnwer as most others so it's probably right. I must have hallucinated when i saw 2666mhz when my pc was brand new. Thanks for answer and your time :)

I think there have been some Windows updates where it did show the MT/s (so 2666 in your case), but I am not 100% sure on that.

If you want to double-check use CPU-Z who I can say for sure will show the RAM as 1333Mhz (because of the explanation given above).
