Using a router as a switch?

Go to solution Solved by thunder9231,

You're making this more difficult than it has to be...

- Unplug secondary router from the main, factory reset if needed if you can't remember any changes that you have made

- Following the MAIN router's IP Addressing scheme, change the 192.168.1.1 to x.x.x.2 or x.x.2.2 (Replace the X with the numbers from the main router) then SAVE

- Type in the new IP address that you just changed, then DISABLE DHCP Server. SAVE
- Go into advanced routing, change the Operating mode from Gateway to Router. SAVE

You now have a switch with a built-in access point

Any IP addresses are determined by DHCP on the MAIN router. NOT the secondary
Don't plug incoming network from main router into the WAN port on the secondary. It will not work. Plug into the LAN ports

It should be possible to have 2 routers and use one of them as a switch, right? I have the main router on the other side of my house but it's too far away for wifi, so I have a 100ft ethernet cable (only one). I have a spare Linksys router that I had the idea to use as a switch but it's not working. Am I doing something wrong?

Router A ->Router B (cable plugged into Ethernet port) -> Computer + PS3 (ethernet cables plugged into slot 1 and 2 on router B)

Is this the first router or the second ??

if it is the second you must choose bridge mode in "Internet Connection Type"

Hope you solved ! ;)

I could go through and try all of them but none say "bridge mode" :P

Go on to the advanced routing tab on the first page at the top and screenshot and also go on internet connection type page and screenshot that please

you need to try and set the internet IP address and the first router and on the default gateway the IP address that the first router connects to the internet with, I assume a separate modem??

It's a router/modem combo thingy... Can't find the words to properly describe it at the moment.

Okay, now I'm here.

I assume a few numbers have to be changed from 0 to something else?

Change the destination IP to the IP address of the first router

the Subnet Mask should be 255.255.255.0, check on the first router and see what that subnet mask is

the default gateway should be the ip address of the first router again

Alrighty, now I need to figure out how to access the AT&T router... xD

I did all of that but it changes the default lan ip from .254 back to .0 when I save and I still get a no internet error.

screenshot the numbers you have put in now then please?

might be the pc network settings you need to change now :)

I put .254 there but it keeps defaulting back to .0

It is supposed to be the IPv4 address on the first router, right?

leave the destination lan ip as it gives it and go on to the pc you have connected up to the second router and go to the network device properties of the lan port

set the ip address to an address you want the pc to have  try and use 192.168.225.10

subnet mask will input itself in

set the default gateway to the ip address of the second router

set the dns server to the ip address of the first router

I did not read the other posts, sorry...

did you try turning off DHCP on the router you want to act as a switch?

I'm not entirely sure that this is what you meant...

Perhaps the IP should be .0 instead of .10?
