So I got a EVGA GTX 1070 FTW2 recently, and while some things are still unclear (for example my warranty is only "206" days...) the card is pretty ok and as expected, *except* it basically doesn't OC at all... +50 core +400 memory, which is also kinda expected, except they have a second "overclocking BIOS" which is exactly the same, even if I raise power limit to the max the result is exactly the same, +50, +400.

Raising the voltage, even just 1 point crashes the card in any benchmarks, even with the secondary "overclock BIOS"...

So I think this is pretty clearly false advertising / mislabeling a product, and I'm wondering what are my options (also regarding the warranty)

Basically should I return it to Amazon or to EVGA, and would EVGA even do anything, or should I just live with having a "overclock" card that doesn't overclock (well, barely)?

My GTX 1080 and GTX 1080 tis only do +50 clock +400 vram but they are EVGA SC & SC2 models. It is the reason I did not bother with FTW that generation.

I did buy a Gigabyte Extreme GTX 1080 that was clocked higher but the card stock had lots of crashes and driver failures and only ran well as a second card in SLI.

By contrast my EVGA 2080 ti XC does +200 clock/ +1200 vram and my FTW 3 Ultra does +150 in games and +175 in benches with +1100.

The 10 series were not much fun and the 30s don't sound like much fun either but the 20 series are lots of fun and an overclocked FTW3 Ultra 2080 ti makes the 3080 not much of an upgrade at all.

Heh, figures, yeah as said I don't really get the point of labeling them FTW and put a second bios on them (as is the point of this thread lol) and I was kind of expecting the same behavior as my msi gtx 1060 (which btw is a 1000 series gpu!!!! 🤣) which is an overclocking beast, but I get it you can't expect this from every card, still I think evga should not use this label for cards that have very limited overclocking potential, you know, I'm like why, seems to be the only reason is to get a couple of more bucks! 🤔

So from what I gathered the second BIOS is supposed to have/allow for a little bit higher power target, but you are stuck at 112% with both?

No, it does change to 122% (or something) it also sets a minimum fan curve of 12% or something (which is just lol) but it does *not* overclock any more, if I set it to anything above +50 for core or even just +1 on *voltage* it crashes on any benchmarks... (same as the "master" bios) Hence it is completely pointless and would only make sense with a better binned chip (hence literally false advertising, they say it overclocks better with this bios, but it really doesn't) also why are there 2 8pin connectors... Also makes no sense, and is clearly misleading.

PS: I tried the same with Afterburner because I thought maybe this precision x1 software just sucks, but there is no difference at all so I don't think it's a software issue

Ok small update - maybe for people experiencing similar overclocking woes, it might help them, even though it's a *old* card by now...

Changed the fancurve slightly again to be less aggressive (erratic) and this is what it settled down for now

Not bad, stays like this for hours, of course if I play less demanding games it clocks even higher, but that's just the oddities of "gpu boost 3" or whatever ... I guess I'll just have to accept that the second bios is literally useless if I want to keep the card, and I still have to see about the warranty thing, but otherwise not a bad card at all (compared to my old 1060 lol)

  • 2 weeks later...

Another small update: after sending the invoice (several times) and several days after "registration" it turns out the gpu was indeed *new* and I got the full 3 years of warranty now too.

The evga site is just a bit slow, apparently.

As for the 2nd bios, well it is what it is, i find it pointless as it doesn't provide any more performance, maybe others get more lucky...
