CPU to pair with 3080

xReqt

Hi,

Is the Ryzen 7 3700x good to pair with a 3080 as Im building a new PC for myself and I have around 300 pounds left for a processor and its comes to around 270 on amazon. My goal is 144hz 1080p gaming which will soon turn to 1440p starting around March 2021.

(I use Amazon UK and Overclockers UK for online purchases in the UK)

I'd also need a motherboard around £100-130 at most.

Any help is appreciated

Yes it's a good pair even a 3600 could work

Reminder⚠️

I'm just speaking from experience so what I say may not work 100%

Please try searching up the answer before you post here but I am always glad to help

I'd probably wait for the 5600X, if your main goal is gaming performance (if AMD's reveal event was anything to go by).

It's releasing in a couple of days.

The upcoming 5600X will be better when you are mainly gaming. Release is planned for thursday this week.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

I heard all processors they're launching with that over 6 cores are going to be like 400+ pounds in which case I won't be able to afford. @Mateyyy

The 5600X will launch at 299$ so it will be in-budget. And 6 cores is more than enough for gaming. Only go for 8 or more cores if you know you can utilize them.

The 5600X's MSRP is $299.

overclockers.co.uk seems to have it listed for 290 quid: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/amd-ryzen-5-5600x-six-core-4.6ghz-socket-am4-processor-retail-cp-3cc-am.html

If reviews show that the gaming performance of Zen 3 is not really all that AMD made it up to be and/or prices are way over MSRP, I'd go with a 10600K or the 3700X you're currently looking at if you're set on it (Zen 2 shouldn't hold the 3080 back that much especially once you upgrade to 1440p).

I am pretty adamite on the ryzen 7 3700x.I just needed to know if its decent to pair with  the 3080 and last 3 years (My goal is not another upgrade for at least that long) I have already 16gb DDR4 3000MHZ. The 8 cores will future proof a bit as well as I play CPU intense games so im sure that will help slightly.

Well then, if you're set on the 3700X, go for it. I'm currently using one myself and it's great overall, even combined with my 3080. But i'll be "downgrading" to a 5600X when it launches because i have yet to see any game making use of my 8 cores. I'd rather have the 6 much faster cores. I should still be able to flip the 3700X for ~200€ afterwards.

EDIT: Afaik most of the leaked benchmarks point towards the 5600X being at least comparable to the 3700X even in multithreaded workloads. So i basically wouldn't recommend it over the 5600X in pretty much any case. I'd just wait a few more days until the benchmarks are out.

Well, if you buy the 5600x then I'd recommend faster ram, will slightly help in performance

For air cooling the best ones in your budget (and best overall) are:

Noctua NH-D15

Noctua NH-U12A

be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4

Arctic Freezer 50

(They're all very similar in terms of noise/performance, pick whatever fits your build.)

For AIOs the best ones in your budget are:

EK-Aio 240mm (could be a little over-budget)

Arctic Liquid Freezer 240 / 280

(These 2 are noticeable better than most other similar sized AIOs. Most other AIOs perform about the same as they all use the same pump/coldplate)

The cooler has very tight ram clearance, but as you'll be going with corsair LPX memory, you're fine. I'd go with 3600MHz cl18 or cl16 RAM for either the 3700X or 5600X to get optimal performance.

Really though, going with the Freezer 34 Esports Duo and putting the leftover cash towards better storage, memory, PSU, you name it, would probably make the most sense.

The 3700X (and 5600X if AMD's claim that it'll pull about the same power as its Zen 2 predecessor is true) really don't put out a lot of heat, and the Freezer 34 is a really solid cooler for the price.

Which one do you mean? The EK-AIO? It's still very new so there are no long-term reviews of it yet. But as EK is a giant in terms of custom water cooling i guess they know what they're doing. But in terms of performance and noise it's a chart topper.

I would suggest getting a higher quality 750W unit instead:

The TXM is not a bad unit, make no mistake, it's just that the Whisper M and RMx (which are around the same price going by PCPP) are much quieter, while also being superior overall in terms of quality and performance.
