My Mini-Review of Windows 8.1 Pro

flibberdipper

So I've been using Windows 8.1 Pro x64 for a while now, and I figure it's time to voice my opinion on it.

PERFORMANCE

Where do I start... Windows 8.1 runs like it stole it. I have never seen anything boot or load anything this fast on an HDD before. EVER. I am honestly surprised that it's this fast on my PC. Boot is about 30 seconds, login to desktop about 20 (compared to Windows 7 Home Premium's terrible 50, 30).

RAM USAGE

Again, very surprised. It seems that it pushes unimportant stuff to the swap, and keeps more important things (or things that are used more) in the RAM. It uses it pretty well too (About 400MB in RAM and swap).

GAMING

I can't really speak about this. The most intensive game I've played is Asphalt 8: Airborne, and my GPU just can't keep up. However, compared to Windows 8, I did gain some FPS in Hill Climb Racing and Fruit Ninja.

RELIABILITY

Once I got it and my computer to get along, it seems rock stable. It's been on for a few days straight, with the only hiccup being Internet Explorer (which is to be expected). NOTE: The only reason it and my computer didn't get along is that I'm using Windows 7 drivers, that it does not seem to like at all.

OVERALL

All in all, I can't see why people hate Windows 8 so damn much. It's gotten better, and once you grow a pair and get used to it, it isn't all that bad, even on a desktop. It's fast, reliable, and seems to use RAM pretty well. My score: 9/10. Only thing that could possibly make it better, is some more games from iOS in the Store. But this is more of a publisher/developer deal, so I can't complain. One of the things I don't like about it, is not having the old Aero, where the program titlebars are translucent, or completely clear (for the most part). Aero in general is just not as nice, but I kinda realize why Microsoft did it.

You clearly need to try Linux Mint to truly understand what speed is but anyway good review. I don't like windows 8 because there's networking issues with VMware and the fact that you can't have the Metro UI 100% gone, if you could choose to have or not have it at install I would greatly consider moving to 8.

I will say this, that was a good review.....However, it feels like it was made for tablets with the whole "take your mouse all the way to the side to change the slide". Also the one simple change of the start button made people everywhere rage.

I don't know how you can say that any linux distro in the last three years is either bloated or deprecated

In my experiences, Xubuntu 12.04 LTS has always edged Mint out, but I still like it.

Both of these statements are true.

He said that my pc could bang it out... but I've bought this W7 key so... anyway, what happened to your pc plan?

Well, a lot of your things could hand my rig it's own ass.

Like you said, I use Windows 8 since the beginning, and I still don't see why people hate it, it just runs so well and honestly the Metro UI can come in handy from time to time so yeah, W8 is a very good OS to me.

The first day the Windows 8 Consumer Preview was out, I put it on my netbook with the one graphics driver that would let me stretch the screen to 1024x768, and it was pretty nice.

Out of all the OSs I have used, 8 is, by far, the best. Fast and stable, with all the compatibility of other Windows OSs. Other favorites include XP, Ubuntu, and 7.

Yep. My favorites (in order from best to least) are 8, XP, 7, Vista. (I still like Vista quite a bit though).

Other than IE (of course) no, actually. And even IE rarely crashed. Vista isn't that bad after all of the updates.

For me, when it took a Google search to find the Shut-down button in a WINDOWS OS, I decided I really didn't like 8. 8.1.1 could be alright though.

Honestly, who the hell at Microsoft decided Shut-down was a SETTING?
