Hello guys, do i need to secure erase a new ssd? it is safe to use samsung magician to perform a secure erase on my crucial ssd?

No need for secure erase.

Unless you're selling the SSD and you're paranoid about people getting data off of it  there's no need to do a full Wipe. Do a quick format from disk manager and you're ready to go.

short: Just delete it but don´t remove the SSD shortly after. The reason being that file deletion is not instantly done but rather after a certain time

 

long:

SSD flash storage works differently than HDD storage. Data on an HDD can be overwritten while this is impossible with flash storage. This is why a file deletion on an HDD will only delete the table of contents but not the actual file. It is simply not necessary to delete the file because it can be overwritten. When you delete a file on an SSD, the actual data will be deleted because only then can the storage be used for new data as overwriting is impossible. This is why restoring a file on an HDD is easy while it is nearly impossible to do it on an SSD.

i got it, im going to install windows right away, but in a future it is safe to use Samsung Magician Secure Erase for a crucial ssd? the Crucial Storage Executive does not have that feature

You should be fine...unless the Samsung software does a check to make sure you are using a Samsung SSD first...otherwise it blocks you from using the software.

 

I don't see why you need to secure erase a *NEW* SSD, especially when you are installing Windows on it.

The Windows install process ALREADY formats & wipes the drive clean...

 

Unless you are selling the SSD, or giving it away, and don't want your data to be scalped / recovered, I don't see the need to secure erase it.

Doing that also wears the SSD memory cells out.

Not a problem if you do it once or twice, but too many times, too frequently, will put unnecessary wear on the SSD.
