SSD+HDD or SSD

Hi,

I am planning a new build an am struggling to chose between 2 storage options. For almost exactly the same price I can a 500GB Crucial P2 NVME SSD and a 1tb Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm HDD, Or for the same price, a 1tb Crucial P2. What will be better?

Ugh..... hard to tell. If I were making that decision I will probably go for the 1tb SSD. Then saved for a little bit to buy a USED 1tb HDD. But ugh.... I don't know your money I guess???

SSD + HDD and avoid m.2 nvme unless you have a good reason to, sata SSDs are no different for gaming purposes

I am doing a £850 Gaming build. Most of the files I store are games or apps. The 1tb SSD is £93, the 500gb SSD is £53 and the HDD is £38

I know this is a weird option here.

 

But if you’re on a new enough Intel Cpu, you could try an Optane module?

 

It won’t do this for everything, but common stuff is super fast, and thanks to it, I have on average about a 7~ second boot time, whereas before I was sitting in the 30 second region.

 

Though I agree with the other guy, whatever you do, hold out and get a different (or used) hard drive. As 1TB hard drive (Or SSD) in my opinion, fills a little too fast tbh.

 

TL;DR, Maybe look at optane if compatible, if not go for 1TB and buy a HDD later

Why though I thought there's no difference between Nvme m.2 and Sata m.2 ssd's besides speed???

NVME costs more for higher speeds of course. Money is better spend elsewhere in the system.

 

Sata SSDs are much better value for money and the speed is more than enough for gaming.

A 1tb 2.5 inch drive would be £17 less than an nvme and since the nvme im looking at has 4x faster read speeds that seemed worth it

This was true before, but many NVMe drives are barely more expensive. It's extremely useful for transferring files etc.

I do agree though not to go for a nvme ssd.

 

I don't the pricing in your country, but for me a 1tb sata m.2 ssd cost about £60 and you can use the rest to buy something else.

Pricing is generally quite high when converted into other currency's in the UK as all the prices have tax included (20%)

Not if that NVMe drive doesn't have cache. For OS's thats a big matter, for general storage, pretty sure it doesn't matter that much.

i would go with 1tb SSD, and just wait for a HDD to go on sale later on when you have money to get it. Gives you plenty of fast storage for those ever growing game file sizes and you can just pick up a HDD when that starts getting full to unload all the extra files you dont need on the SSD.

Okay then fair enough. But still I'd rather go for the 1tb SSD then bought a 1tb HHD. I think it would be a better value overall.

IMO an expensive SATA SSD is better than a NVME SSD which costs a little more.

 

You get a more balanced write/read speed and better components etc.

 

I would stay away from very cheap NVME SSDs, there will be a catch somewhere...

I would go ssd for boot + heavy apps/games (that have the tendency to have long loadings) and hdd for storage (docs, images, files that don't get accessed often, etc.)

Works for me (have a 256 ssd + 2tb hdd)
