In a dual channel motherboard, what would be better

16GB X 2

or

8GB X 4

 

is there any performance difference? If yes, which and how and why???

If I remember right four single-rank sticks is basically equivalent to two dual-rank sticks, so depending on the sticks there may not be any difference at all.

It is better or the same, hardware unbox channel on YouTube has an interesting benchmark. But if you have 4 slots covered, you can't easily upgrade
