Guess they changed that fairly recently. Last time I remember seeing a Hackintosh thread it got locked lol.

It's been our policy for about 2 years now iirc.

Our stance is pretty much that hackintosh discussion is absolutely fine - just not discussion on how or where to acquire a copy of macOS.

Could've sworn it was a more recent change, but whatever, irrelevant lol.

Unless you already own a mac, there’s not really a legal way to get a copy of macOS. They don’t sell physical recovery disks anymore and macOS itself is distributed via the Mac App Store.

Last time I did a hackintosh it was using a Mountain Lion DVD, but I think to make your own disk nowadays you use a program that builds one from your Mac’s recovery partition.

However, you’re not completely out of luck. Many Linux distros like ZorinOS, elementaryOS, kubuntu or xubuntu can be themed to look and feel similar to macOS. Obviously it’s not going to be able to run macOS native software or offer any ecosystem benefits; but if you just want the visual design and a real terminal, it’ll get you there.

Cheapest option for trying macOS itself is to buy a 2014 Mac mini or 2013 Mac Pro used. They’ll run Catalina and Big Sur.

  • 2 weeks later...

It can be quite a process, depending on your system, and not for the feint of heart. If you use your Google-fu I'm sure you can find something you're looking for. It may be possible to run it in a VirtualBox VM, but I'm not sure there's much I can help you with here, within the bounds of the rules.

Yes, it's possible, but the ease depends on the specs of your computer. It's gotten very easy over the years, and it's to the point where you don't need a currently functioning Mac or a macOS virtual machine to do it.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2
