how much experience do you have with setting up drive sharing and what OS's are you familiar/comfortable with?

what budget are you looking for?

how much data do you intend to store?

are you running plex or something similar?

will it be lots of tiny files constantly accessing them (like photo editing or video editing clip sets) or just massive storage space for archive stuff where speed isn't a huge issue?

what connection to your network are you looking at? 1gig hard lined, 5ghz wireless, 10gig network etc

how much space are you setting aside for the server? closet shelf, mITX case size, server rack size etc

are you looking for redundancy with Raid1, or Raid5, ZFS, there's lots of different standards

The best gaming PC is the PC you like to game on, how you like to game on it

Budget?

HOw much storage?

what speeds do you need?

What other stuff?

FOr a basic home server, you really don't need much in terms of cpu and ram, but if you want vms, you want more ram.

Probably go hdds for storage, id go ssds if you want to run lots of vms.

Budget is prob 500 to 800. Want at least 1 to 2 tb. I’m not really familiar with windows network sharing but it seems easy to use. I’m probably going to use raw windows network sharing unless you need plex. It’s just backups of photos and files. My WiFi is fucked at a whopping 18mbps but I’m looking into getting a 200mbps connection.  The server will be connected to the network via Ethernet. And probably closet space.

Is a Ryzen 3 good or Ryzen 5 like 5 1600 or something. And is 16gb ram good? Just file archives. And why do ppl use vms?

Id probalby go i3 10100 here or pentium/celron. igpu for transcoding + no need for a dgpu, low power, pretty cheap

Id probalby get something like 2 4tb hdds here. Then setup a raid 1 and our good.

Id also be really tempted to just get a premade nas for this use.

let's start with the basics,

a NAS is Network Attached Storage also commonly referred to as a "server" or "storage server"

commercial off the shelf ones run anywhere from a few hundred to thousands of dollars WITHOUT storage, you can also build your own but it's often less cost effective until you plan to go 4+ HDDs or require serious speeds with tiered storage (LMG tried this for their editors with files "cached" on faster SSD and large HDDs for the bulk of the files)

for your use case:

https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07XRD3QR6/ref=emc_b_5_t

2x 3.5in HDD bays, plugs right into your current computer through USB3.0 and you can backup files there. add a pair of 2tb Seagate drives and set them to Raid1 (super easy setup wizard, install drives tell it what way you want them formatted and what style of raid you want and it's ready to go)

https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07XRDNP4L/ref=emc_b_5_t

they make a 5x 3.5in HDD bay as well if you feel like having some extra spaces for future upgrades (highly recommended)

if it must be networked:

https://www.amazon.ca/TerraMaster-F4-210-1GB-Attached-Personal/dp/B07ZV7K7GX/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=nas&qid=1602302401&s=electronics&sr=1-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFMRzZMRUkxMjRHMDAmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA4MjAxNzkxQkNBTTc3WDJNNTE3JmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA3NTgzMDIxR0cwT09QMVFSUTIyJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

4x 3.5in HDD bays, same setup as the other one. get a pair of 2+tb 3.5in HDDs which fits your budget and plug it into the network, step by step will walk you through the process and these ones typically come with "cloud" software so if you travel or forget a file it's available online, behind your account login and only stored on your own drive.

The best gaming PC is the PC you like to game on, how you like to game on it

Man, thanks a bunch for the explanation. I’ll look into that. Thanks!!!
