My first Fake graphics card, anyone had this aswell?

Gekido
So our aunt bought a cheap PC (1000 yuan) on Taobao and when delivered asked me to check it out...

When running a 3D Mark benchmark I already found it weird to see how the FPS dropped to below 20 while this supposed to be an GTX 1050 graphics card. After installing Speccy and GPU-Z it was indeed what I suspected: FAKE!!!

Based on the model it's actually a GT 1030 from 2012!

My wife chat with customer support and at first they didn't believe me but when showing photo's it was clear and they admit their mistake. Now they will sent a real GTX 1050 graphics card and funny thing is is that on Taobao this card is at lowest price point about 450 yuan which is almost half of the total price of the computer. But hey, that's their problem right!?

So funny to actually see a fake graphics card in a system. Any other #pcmr friends experienced this first hand aswell?

I'm far more bothered by you running Windows XP than the fake GPU.

Oh, right. Well, I guess that's my budget for personal stupidity fulfilled for today.

I had to look it up as that sounded too old, the 1030 was actually from 2017.

I'm wondering, if the seller was intentionally using the fakes or if they were genuinely fooled by fakes also. Good that they agreed to correct this situation.

The only card I have that is questionable is a cheap NVS300 I got off ebay. GPU-Z detects it as a fake, but who would fake an ancient low end pro card? There is little official information available for the GPU so I have to wonder if in my case it is a false positive. My sample didn't match GPU-Z's sample and thus was flagged.

Seems to be a legit SKU according to Tech PowerUp...

Sounds like it had a BIOS hack/flash to report as a 1050 from wherever the scraped the card up from to put it in the machine.

My thinking aswell... Just scrapped it out of a pc somewhere and sold it in "new" pc's and sell on Taobao. They target at people who don't even realize it. Unfortunately I found out haha.

I am really curious what system your aunt got for 150 USD. Where I live, a new GT 1030 costs 85 dollars.

@GekidoPlease do send a link, I might get one and just put a real BIOS on the 1030, costs £50 for GPU alone

Please tag me @RTX 3090 so I can see your reply

Update on this topic!

Today we got a delivery from that webshop, it seems to be a new graphics card. Will it be real or another fake one? It turns out that this is a true GTX 1050 card as promised! Everything checked out and 3d mark score seems reasonable.

Hope tonight our auntie will be happy with her "new" computer. Will she have chicken dinner? :) :)

Yea I think they do this to people that don't know better.

Most people aren't doing benchmarks on pre-built systems.

At least the seller didn't have a problem sending a real card over, they probably got burned on the price as well.

I think Linus has some videos where he buys cards from sites like aliexpress and wish which are fake cards or rather older cards with a hacked BIOS

Pretty sad this happens
