I forgot to review this… - Sonos Arc Soundbar Review

Soundbars have pretty much replaced the ol' "home theater in a box" solution, but in my experience don't offer a high fidelity sonic experience...until now? The Sonos Arc is the first soundbar that I've been impressed enough with to actually install in my living rooom. Now, should I get the subwoofer?

I'd love to see a LTT video or maybe TechQuickie on the real world difference of the analytical data for videos with clickbait thumbnails and titles opposed to something normal. I know technically you can't discuss the exact numbers but maybe if you take an outside approach using sites like social blade. As anyone could get this metrics so it wouldn't breach any agreements

I was wondering if you'd ever review this.  Looks way better than their old sound bar.  I'll wait for my playbase to die then look at upgrading.

Ok, we have to talk about the elephant in the room: the subwoofer. It's not only a clear copy of the Jonsbo UMX series of cases (and looks just like a computer to me), but also doesn't follow the design language of the Arc. And to add insult to injury, it's glossy and costs an additional $900 CAD. I don't understand why a simple subwoofer with two speakers will cost a whopping 90% of the soundbar with 11 (!) speakers. It's arbitrary.

I'm need a new entertainment system and wants a decently good sound system without having to tinker or having too much setup work (active/passive speaker/receiver). I dont even mind paying more. This seems like a good choice. Basically I want the iphone of speakers. Lol

Great review. Though as someone who's clearly into Sonos' gear for me the ~$1400AU for a soundbar which lacks any kind of HDMI passthrough it's a bit of a tough sell. If I'm spending that much all at once on a piece of tech I don't really want major compromises. Especially once you add the cost surrounds and a Sub which, lets face it, you're going to end up doing with Sonos gear given how great it sounds.

 

I think the bigger question is whether or not the Arc with Atmos is better sounding than their cheaper Beam (~$600AU) paired with two Ones (2x ~$250AU, less if you get some Play1s used). Especially as someone who has a Beam plus Ones setup. I mean Beam + 2x Ones is basically the same number and power of drivers as the Arc by itself. So is Arc without rears much of an upgrade from a Beam with rears. That's what I want to know.

 

My gut feeling is that having speakers physically behind you is better but.... I'm probably biased given that's the setup I already have

It is relatively expensive for a sub but it's really not THAT expensive compared to standalone subs with similar levels of power. Also the number of speakers is kinda irrelevant, the only two metrics that matter are the power output and the frequency response. A sub is designed to output lower frequencies and, generally, at a higher power output than other speakers. Mids and tweeters you generally have more speakers running at a lower output because higher frequencies are more directional. Saying "one has 11 speakers and the other has two" is like saying "this 16TB HDD is better because it's more capacity than this 1TB SSD"

 

Also the Sonos Sub has had the same look, more or less, since it launched in 2012. I might be wrong but I don't remember seeing any Jonsbo cases back then, certainly not at the retailers I shopped at. Also Jonsbo doesn't have a patent on rectangles with rounded corners....

No, it's not. The soundbar uses at least 4 individual amplifiers (and DSP channels), L, C, R and the upfiring effect speakers. It probably uses even more. You also need passive crossovers and it will take a considerable amount of time to develop and build it. A subwoofer on the other hand needs just one amplifier and one DSP channel and is the most basic loudspeaker imaginable. It takes no effort to build a good subwoofer. If they are able to sell the soundbar for $999 CAD and still make a profit, the profit margin of the subwoofer must be gigantic.

Fair point. The design isn't copied, but very old. And yet it doesn't fit the design of the soundbar. It being around since 2012 would pretty much explain the stupid and outdated glossy finish. Urgh!

Two quick points in what is largely a dead thread otherwise. Firstly I'm not saying that Sonos speakers aren't expensive, they most certainly are, all I'm saying is that the Sub isn't outrageously priced in comparison to the other speakers in its lineup and other decent subs. A decent Sub, which the Sonos Sub most definitely is, will be the most expensive single speaker in a setup by quite a margin. Some of that's the higher power delivery, the larger driver but I'm sure a fair chunk of that it making space for it on the shelf and physically shipping it around

 

Excuse Australian pricing but looking at my local HiFi retailer their non-Sonos subs start at $750AU and most are in the $1000-2000AU range with one at $7500AU and probably your left Kidney. Their standalone soundbars at this same store go from ~$550AU upto $2000AU. For comparison the Sonos Sub is $950AU, the Arc is $1400AU and their cheaper soundbar the Beam is $550AU (and also happens to be the cheapest soundbar this store stocks). Sure you can get some junk Bose something for far less but compared to your other premium HiFi options? Sonos is priced relatively low.

 

On a second slightly more technical point. Sonos gear doesn't use passive crossovers and also your numbering is off. The Arc has 11 amplifiers, 8 mid range drivers and 3 tweeters. The Sub has two amplifiers and two low range drivers which are physically in sync to reduce cabinet vibrations. I mean call them overengineered or overpriced if you want and frankly I'm with you on that even as a fan. Even so.... I don't think it's fair to call either of these products simple or basic

I was just referring to the "least" amount of amplifier channels needed. I didn't know how many are used in the Arc or the sub. For each channel you can use either an active crossover with up to as many amplifier channels as there are speakers or you can use one amplfier channel and a passive crossover.

"Simple and basic" wasn't meant as an insult to call Sonos' products cheaply made. But a subwoofer is by definition a simple speaker. You can easily and accurately calculate the frequency response with the Thiele-Small parameters. For mid-high speakers not so much.

BTW, this is just a marketing scheme. They have to be "in sync" to work (and can be easily driven with one amplifier channel). All they did was placing the speakers facing each other so lateral movement will be canceled out. Nevertheless clever, but nothing new.

I wasn't even complaining about the price in the first place. Just the difference in price. In Canada the Sonos subwoofer cost $899 CAD and the Arc $999 CAD. The difference seems to be more reasonable in Australia. The Arc is replacing at least three speakers (L, C, R) of a more conventional setup with individual speakers. It was probably a fallacy but I assumed the Arc and the Sub are in the same league. Paying almost as much for a subwoofer compared to three equal quality high-mid speakers doesn't seem right to me. I expect a subwoofer to cost a little bit more than one high-mid speaker.

Marketing or not having two drivers, two amps and basically a small ARM based controller is quite a bit more engineering than pretty much all of the Subs in the same price range. That and the cabinet itself which is far from a simple box. My point was more that while Subs are relatively simple in general Sonos' is far from simple compared to the majority of other subs. I'm not really that surprised it costs more than, say, the Yamaha NS-SW200

I mean, define "one" speaker. I mean we're comparing apples and oranges here anyways, I wouldn't expect a Sub to "cost a little more" than a single amplified bookshelf speaker. They're entirely different categories of speakers with different requirements. Here, I think this video will add a bit more to this convo:

It's not particularly scientific, there's more to speaker performance than draw from the wall. Even so the Sub at full volume draws more than twice as much power as the Arc (245W vs 110W). And remembering this is two drivers and amps vs 11, so basically on average over 10x more wattage per amp/driver. Now I'm no Audio engineer but I'd imagine an amplifier capable of delivering 10x more power and a driver that could handle 10x more power would cost a fair bit more.
