Would it be cheating to run F@H on an AWS instance?

I was wondering if it would be possible and how many points could you get out of running F@H on a AWS instance and would it be worth it, would it be considered cheating?

Was just an idea that popped into my head lmao.

Probably not worth it. But no, it is not considered cheating (AFAIK). Folding@home is not actually a competition so if you can rent out server space/power to fold you are not breaking any rules, just helping the cause. In fact, I believe there are a few people who rent out server farms for folding month.

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I’m wrong.

Not just for f@h, but some people do it for other distributed computing projects, especially for challenges.

 

I've long debated at what point does it make sense to go cloud. In the past I came to the conclusion if I went for the lowest AWS tier CPU instances, it could be comparable in cost to just electricity for running my existing gear. No GPU work though.

 

You might find other providers can give something cheaper although I have no looked into this in detail myself.

This one I think is more BOINC focused but it is intended to be easy to set up. It was set up by the creator of PrimeGrid project which is how I became aware of it.

There are some who know how to wrangle them very well and get some nice performance on the cheap.

That said, there are many other who use cloud computing. We call them mercenaries. It's not cheating.

Cray had a service where they would sell customers HPC computers but the hardware is 100% in the cloud and leverage providers like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon. They just wrote the software to make it seamless and appear to not be in the cloud. Well that was the idea anyways. They are 2 years behind schedule and I think they are going to ditch the project. It was Shasta if that means anything to you lol

Yes it is possible. 

 

How many points you'd get depends on how many resources you buy. That's kind of the point of AWS. You can scale performance very easily. 

 

No it wouldn't be worth it compared to just buying the hardware yourself and running F@H. You're paying by the hour with AWS. You're literally renting CPU power. It works well for certain stuff, but a near endless project like F@H where you can pour more and more resources into it is kind of stupid use case. 

 

No it wouldn't be considered "cheating", why would it? F@H isn't a game or anything you can cheat in. The researchers doesn't care what machine you used to calculate protein folds with, just that you did.

I run it in a pretty sophisticated way to maximize value. Basically spot instances running in containers that auto-scale based on price around the world. It's likely the cheapest way to fold but also not the easiest thing to do. Here's a repo to get started:

Right now I'm focusing my cloud budget on something entirely different. When I turn the engine on, it's strong and has good value. I have been wanting to turn my solution into an Easy Button so anyone could join in but haven't put the time towards that.

Also, if you just spin up regular EC2 instances and run the client, it will be hella expensive. Don't recommend!
