Need help with potential upgrade.

Zapdog4

Hello I'm new to computers or at least the internals. I was looking to upgrading my GPU but I'm concerned it will cause a bottleneck somewhere else. I bought a rig for $100 and it came with a Core I7 quad core 920 @ 2.67GHz, 12GB of DDR3 1067MHz ram in 3 sticks, and a GeForce GTX 650. I'm thinking of upgrading to a GTX 1050 but not sure if its the right move to get more performance out of my machine. Any and all help would be appreciated.

You'll get some performance out of it, but I think if possible... It'd be best to upgrade the cpu as well with the 1050 depending on your budget.

a gtx 1050 would be a decent match with that cpu, but would need to know where you are having performance issues to say for sure if gpu is the best thing to address first. if you don't have an ssd, that would be the first thing you would want to upgrade imo.

For further information I have a Intel DX58SO motherboard and a 750w corsair power supply. no SSD just a 500GB Disc Drive. The rig also has in one of the PCI slots a USB 3.0 expansion card. Oh and a disc reader/burner.

Thank you Br3tt and bmx for your input so far

I'd replace your CPU with a $50 6c12t Xeon like an X5650 or X5675, upgrade your GPU to a used 570/580 (probably $80-100), and throw in an SSD.

they're more like $10 nowadays, might as well just get it with how cheap they are.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

Thank you I ended up ordering the CPU for 30 and spent 120 on the GPU. I plan on getting a SSD later as it's not in my immediate budget.

He would also have to upgrade the motherboard and likely ram as well if he wants to upgrade the cpu

The Xeon 5650 recommended uses the same chipset

What cpu and gpu did you end up getting?

I got a XFX Radeon RX 570 and... Cancelled the CPU order. If you check my profile you'll see I have a proprietary Intel motherboard that they don't support. I went to install the graphics card and it doesn't quite work, well I need to update the bios as the motherboard is 10ish years old. I called Intel today and they don't have the files for it at all. Now I'm going to build a new system using my same case and power supply withe the graphics card I bought. I'm planning on building something AMD 3000 series CPU
