Question about new GPU availability

EpicEric

I bought an RTX 2080 Super, and when the 3080 comes out, I want to return it and buy a 3080. My question is, do stores usually have new cards in stock the day of release? This is my first time looking to buy such a new card, and I don't know how hard it will be to find one.

Also, would I have a better chance pre-ordering or buying online?

My 2080 Super's return policy ends September 20th, so I want to preferably get one before then.

I don't think you can even get Founders Edition cards anywhere except from Nvidia directly. There may be board partners offering reference PCB cards, but as far as I know there's no news about who or when yet.

I think it'll be an F5 mashing contest and fingers crossed to be one of the lucky that manage to get one.

You're gonna be cutting it pretty close there. The 3080 will become available on Nvidia's website (most likely for pre-order) on the 17th of September, and from there it'll trickle down into stores. There may be some retailers that have some available on launch day, but that's dependent on a whole bunch of things.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

Got any questions about my system or peripherals? Feel free to tag me (@bellabichon) and I'll be happy to give you my two cents.

PSA: Posting a PCPartPicker list with no explanation isn't helpful for first-time builders :)

It will all sell out in a minute online a d then we'll have to wait at least a month for restock and 3rd party card to hit....it's always like that.

Op...the store won't accept to take your card back anyways if it's been opened and used...the return policy is always valid only for article that have not been used or opened.

No, the return policy is valid. Does it really sell out that fast? What would my chance be of actually getting one?

Also, is there a way to pre-order it?

It's hard you have to be ready to click on Nvidia website the second they get available and click quickly and hope for the best.

If I don't get it, do I have any other options?

Very low even if things go well for Nvidia (e.g. no atifacting issue that hurt Nvidia during 20 series launch which caused a lot of cards to be returned shortly after they are delivered). Heck with strong performance gains like this without big price leaps, I doubt supply will be stable until November which is already optimistic (since Sept 19 is just for founders, you have to add an extra month for custom cards)

Yeah I agree I think these cards will be hard to find before Christmas.

What do you think my graphics card will be worth in, let's say, January? If I can sell it, I'll upgrade when supply becomes better.

Considering the RTX 3070 will apparently outperform the 2080 Ti (and for 500 USD), you can expect to get less than that. Of course, no one knows how the used market will fair over the next few months but this is a pretty good indicator.

Edit - I just clicked on that link to see you paid 1000+ for a 2080 Super with the new cards released now (very bad timing!). If I were you I would return it whether you get a 3000 series or not to avoid the huge loss if you sell it second hand.

400cad tops, keep in mind that the 2080ti equivalent (in perf, according to Nvidia) is only a 650CAD part and will get cheaper by then

How do preorders work for Canada, I cannot seem to find an Nvidia Canada Page on the 30 series, is it worth looking on Amazon and Newegg on launch day?

@Jurrunio Well, I do hear that crypto may be starting back up again, so who knows what cards are going to cost used.

Also, I'm expecting the AMD cards to still be competitive with the nVidia offerings, so if you aren't able to snag one in the launch window, it won't be the end of the world.
