Nvidia 3000 cards and PSU confusion

KaptainKloss

Did Linus say in the last WAN show that 3000 cards will require a 850W PSU? Assuming a 350W - 400W power draw for OC'd cards are 850 Watt PSU's going to be necessary or is that still overkill?

He said something like the 1 pin interface is designed to carry up to 600w power, but that don't mean we'll get such a high power card because inability to cool

Didn't get around to watching it yet but I assume the discussion stemmed from Seasonic's recommendation of 850W.

If the 3090 was to pull 400W, you could still have zero problems with a 650W unit. Wattage recommendations from manufacturers are usually overkill anyway (mostly to account for people using really crappy PSUs), but if I had to guess, part of the reason why they'd recommend 850W is the fact that the 3090 doesn't exactly look like a gaming GPU, but rather more of a Titan replacement, so it being paired with an HEDT CPU could be a very possible scenario.

Say for example you pair the 3090 (which again let's assume it'll pull 400W) with something like a Threadripper 3970X - there's another 275-300W of power draw. Add in the rest of the components in the system (which really doesn't equate to a whole lot of watts) and some headroom (because people love that word) and 850W sounds about right.

yea so assuming majority of sales will come from the 3070 / 3080 I think 750W would be enough.

We're possibly days from getting the official information, but the rumoured 3080 is not much lower in power usage than the 3090. The 3070 is more normal for a higher end nvidia card (or a mid range AMD card) when it comes to power needs.

Depending on the rest of the system, I'd think a 550W is plenty for the rumoured 3070, maybe going up to 650W for the higher cards.

my train of thought, i don't know anything

Spoiler

product generally dont go down in efficiency in the next gen = next gen higher perf per watt

+

nvidia states next gen have such high wattage req

= next gen cards are monsters

so the gap between this gen and next gen = huge (like seriously, imagine drawing the wattage of 2x 2080Ti)

but the leaked pricing doesnt quite match up

we might be looking at a dual GPU card honestly, but the PCB is too small for it...

it's a far fetched thought, im just gonna wait for launch and reviews to see what's up

maybe nvidia got wind about big navi kicking arse, and is doing something about it

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

Just watched the WAN show and I did not catch on any PSU recommendation, only guesses on what the new connection could potentially handle.

Gonna have to wait for the cards to actually be announced to know how much they'll draw and thus what kind of PSU you need...
