Hello,

I am facing some issue with my UPS and PSU. Need some help here.

Case 1:

Whenever I do high load tasks like gaming and power cuts off my UPS goes into backup mode but my PC shuts down. Now when I try to power on the PC it doesn't respond which means PSU Protection Circuit was tripped.

Case 2: While UPS is in backup mode if I game it shuts off backup power and same happens as in case 1.

Case 3: If there is a minor power surge mouse led shuts off for a split second.

My Full specs is in signature and my UPS is a 1Kva unit from a well known tier 2 brand.

My PC max power draw is around 300w at max.

Is this indication of faulty UPS or something else.

I have called the UPS company to take a look at the UPS on friday.

I disabled signatures on the forum. It helps if you just include relevant specs in the original post.

There's a couple situations you can run into here.

  1. Exceeding UPS output rating.
  2. PSU doesn't like the UPS Sine-Wave (cheap unit Square Wave)
  3. Hardware issue with the UPS.
  4. Hardware issue with the PSU.

Those are to name a few. Have you tried plugging other devices into the UPS? Do they behave irregularly too?

My monitor is also plugged into UPS it also shuts down.

System specs:

Ryzen 5 3500 Stock Cooler

Asrock x570 Phantom Gaming 4

G.Skill Ripjaws V 2x8gb @3000

Zotac 1660s Twin Fan

Matrix Evolve

860 evo + Wd Blue 1tb + Bx500 480gb

Cx450

UPS is a 1000va unit so it should be okay with upto 600w. It worked fine for 10months and started giving issues in the 11th month.

It's a low to mid range PSU but since your monitor exhibits the same behaviour it does suggest the problem is likely the UPS itself. What model is the UPS? Have an exact model number?

Wait a sec. I just noticed monitor stays on and goes into No Signal Detected mode only PSU shuts off. Normal usage runs okay and PSU doesn't shut off. Only in UPS backup mode whenever there is load PSU shuts off and trips its circuit.

Its a Microtek Twin Guard Pro Power+ 1000Va UPS.

Sounds like a bad UPS to me. I've looked at their website, it says "1000VA/600w". That's BS. You can never convert VA's into watts, that all depends on the load the user attaches to it.

Also, 600 watts of real power at 1000VA load would mean an extremely poor power factor, (such as some very bad electric motor) or (more likely) a UPS that isn't actually 1000VA.

Does it only do it when the UPS switches to backup power or does it also do it when you're already running on backup power?

No it does the same when its already on backup power. Like if I play games on backup power it goes kaput

Yes it was a dud UPS.

I got it repaired and when I brought it home it just caught fire when I put it on charge.

Spectacular! did it not destroy anything else?

Nope, nothing was connected to it. I just out it to charge as the batteries were also changed.

Good guy Corsair tripped and warned me of the mishap that was about to happen.

Gonna buy a APC this Sunday
