Bad PSU's are bad, good PSU's are good.

Good PSU's can run a system properly and safely.

Bad PSU's can have badly damage itself and the components in a system.

Good friends don't let their friends buy bad PSU's, this could certainly happen with a PSU that is not adequate for the system.

Buy a PSU fit for the system you're building, don't cheap out on it.

Explode is an over exaggeration but cheap PSUs can be very unreliable and can actually catch fire IN RARE CASES. Realistically when it comes to psu you should be buying something from a reputable company with an 80+ certification of somekind.

If it's a bad PSU with bad ripple no protections bad voltage regulations bad components  and just a bad PSU, yes it can.

Never cheap out on a PSU.

And quick note, brand, wattage and efficiency have nothing to do with quality.

A known brand or a decent efficiency doesn't guarantee that the unit will be a good quality one.

Thats true but its not a bad place to start your research and if a PSU is missing both those things I mentioned it would be a red flag to me when talking about a consumer level PSU
