I kinda want to learn to code a bit, and I'm thinking about using http://www.codeacademy.com to do so. How easy will it be to get into this? And is it free, more importantly?

It's free yes.

Codeacadamy is fun for a few minutes but gets boring (atleast for me).

I did start out programming in Visual Basic, and from there I've programmed in HTML/CSS/PHP/Javascript and C#.

If you use Codeacademy you will learn the very basics of a language. You're better of buying books/classes about coding if you want to get more into it.

It's a nice start though to see if you like it.

Yeah I just want to see if I can get into it, and if I can I'll find some more advanced things. :D

Codeacademy is awful.

You would learn so much more by using a book to learn the structures of if statements, all the different loops, and the structures of classes, etc. for your chosen language.

Then use that knowledge along with online documentation to build a project you have thought of. What kind of software do you want to make? Websites? Desktop applications? Mobile apps?

Right now I'm thinking more about desktop apps. My first REAL program would be a square root calculator (portable .exe of course).

It will get boring fast though, you need to do exactly as they tell you to otherwise you can't move on. But that is my person experience.

It's free, but not that good. I've tried using it to learn Javascript and it's not very good. I switched to a written tutorial and it was a lot easier.

As @Ivyk said, it's annoying because you need to type exactly what they say, you don't get to experiment with the code.

It's not awful, it can be useful to learn the very basic structures and synthax. But don't expect to be able to code a very complex app when you finished your course with it. :P

C# would probably be a good start.

MSDN has lots of great documentation for C#, and it is a widely used language. You can also compile it on Linux with Mono.

When I learned to program we started by using this resource:

http://math.hws.edu/javanotes/

I would highly recommend it.

There are download links at the bottom.

The first language will probably be hard to learn, but after that it gets substantially easier. Almost to the point where you don't really need guides, but you just need to look at available libraries.  I prefer just going out and doing random things with the code. If you reach a problem, you can search the webs for some solutions because I guarantee that someone before you had that problem.

Okay, here's a question. I'm probably gonna need Visual Basic 2010. Is there a free one, or will I have to pay to use it? Sorry for my n00bness.

Try just Googeling several things you can do in any desired language and you will eventually learn programming by doing that, and expirementing ofcourse.

i agree but you should have some sort of goal or something like making mini porgrams  to learn how things work

you literally couldve spent 5 minutes with the site and answered all of your questions....

... I just wanted to check beforehand. I have enough junk accounts hanging around. Don't want another one. And I'm at school and the internet is being funky again.

this is a extremely good program, it teaches java thoroughly from the ground up for people who don't understand coding.

For learning programming I just watch YouTube videos.

I made this with some help from a TinkerNut video...
