sorry about the misinformation OP ;)

It's fine. I saw that it was JS and not regular Java. :D

Not as easy as your mom!

regular_show__oooooh_by_viochik-d3ejuqp.

Haha JUST KIDDING man! :D

I've learned to program HTML / CSS / Javascript / PHP  and i'm now learning Python, I think Codecademy is awesome and i really recommend it! But if you want te learn more than the basics you should buy a book.. Well that is what i did.

go onto youtube or academicearth.org and follow a set of programming lectures from mit, standford, yale etc.

you can do one a day, it will last about an hour and a half and you will actually learn something

when i first started i tried websites like codeacademy and like the other have said, it  gets boring quick.

the hardest part is to motivate yourself to keep working on it.

... I just wanted to check beforehand. I have enough junk accounts hanging around. Don't want another one. And I'm at school and the internet is being funky again.

you can sign in through google facebook or twitter(maybe not twitter)

Oh and btw, programming is NOT easy.

I kinda figured that. Even making the little square root calculator was a bit of a pain.

It's a good way to get your feet wet, interactive sites are good for very very very very basic practice, but as everyone has said before, a single book (very easy to find online) can give you a good starting point. Still, the site looks like a good start.

Good luck!

Hi Dude,

Nope.

Dont use codeacademy.

That's it.  It is misleading as hell for someone who want to be a real programmer. Just grab a book (ugh.. really a book? YES!!) and look in it. It always offers a best start you can get.

For your .exe file you can use c++ or C# (although i would go for c++ , Its more grown-up but its one of the most powerfull ones out there).

Or you can go with java , it offers multiplatform (linux, windows, osx i believe, android, web, servers, all sort of stuff). It is much easier and quicker if you want to build yourself functional program, which helps you in work/school.

it doesnt build into .exe but there are many other ways you can run it in one click.. And now 99percent of people has java on their pc (chart made in my head).

Also , who learned any language by using codeacademy? he always then must go to the youtube videos or books.  With few books and googlin you can make freakin' cool stuff. Automatization, games, programs which are very good payed when offered.

Dont go dumb, dont go codeacademy.

the site might work for a while, but it doesn't state for wich language it is wich might make it harder later on or when you chose a language.

Im myself am doing this with python(2.7) atm on http://docs.python.org/2/contents.html it works pretty well and explains quite alot, it includes reference's to other language's or in wich certain pieces of code they have in common, i think it is usefull later on when learning other language's.

  • 3 months later...

Like people in the beginning of the thread have stated, if you are truly just beginning you might find it helpful to understand what code is actually like etc but if its not your first time with code then it will indeed get very boring. I find places like youtube much more fulfilling as you even get to look for content of your language of choice. If you are on win8 the winStore has an app called programming tutorials that I think should be very helpful in a multitude of languages. There are also a bunch of other sites that you can look to for code examples for learning. And yes codeacademy is easy, too easy personally but I didn't try it when I was a beginner so your experience maybe different.
