The questions are:

  • Buying a better motherboard to make upgrading to CPUs with higher current draw a viable upgrade path I think is worth it, so to go at least to Tear C so that he can get to a 3900X if he wanted to. Probably a B550 would be all he needed, rather than a 570. I'd need to research which is the cheapest in that tier.
  • He could probably leave off the nvme drive and just buy that later if need be.
  • I did consider the 5700XT but he's used to Nvidia and Blender, when last I checked, played better with the green team.
  • The 3600X seems like the sweet spot at the moment, so even though CAD would benefit from more cores, the cost per core goes up a lot from there.

UserBenchmark, if it is to be believed, has a decent boost:

3 months later new gen cpu and gpu come out and regret your life

dont pick that mobo, 2nd lowest model from each brand is miles better

get better ssd, NO QLC, NO DRAMLESS, full speed 3000mb+ for little more

GPU likely won't come out until late fall/early 2021, and the CPU won't see that much of an improvement and will cost more.

I doubt he'll be regretting much.

I think your proposed build looks good, I wouldn't change anything

You can do that if you want to but the 3600 will probably be fine for a long time

I looked up some Blender benchmarks, and for the most part, it fluctuates a bit, but here's the benchmark scores and you can make your decision

  Reveal hidden contents

Blender 2.83 GPU Rendering Performance - BMW (Cycles) Project (June 2020)

Blender 2.83 GPU Rendering Performance - Classroom (Cycles) Project (June 2020)

Blender 2.83 GPU Rendering Performance - Controller (Cycles) Project (June 2020)

Blender 2.83 GPU Rendering Performance - Mr Elephant (Eevee) Project (June 2020)

Also, don't use UserBenchmark, it's unreliable

Thank you, super helpful reply, both re UserBenchmark and the Blender benchmarks 👍

What? A second lowest model from most companies don’t even have 1 vrm heatsink. At least this board does
