Got a case and CPU, need recommendations for the rest.

dennisrcao

Budget (including currency):  1000

Country:  USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:  Ableton Live 10, I mostly need this computer for audio sound design, running an ableton template of 50 tracks, which always maxes out my Macbook Pro.  I'd also like to occasionally play some games, and basic video editing.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

Exiting parts:

Case: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1561224-REG/fractal_design_fd_ca_def_r5_bk_define_r5_black.html

CPU: https://www.amd.com/en/products/cpu/amd-ryzen-7-1700x

So my friend, who does video editing, sold me a case and CPU (listed above) for 150 - great deal I thought.

Now I need the other parts. Which motherboard would you recommend? I'd like at least 32 GB of RAM and 2 TB of storage.

Rationale:

Cooler: Dead silent, extremely reliable, a little overkill but I figured for sound work you'd want something quiet

Board: Decent enough VRM, cheap, lots of expansion slots for sound cards, etc.

Memory: Cheap, fast enough for Zen 1

SSD: basic, reliable, DRAM-cached

Graphics card: Lots of gaming horsepower and punches above its weight in video editing thanks to the slightly different die vs. a normal 2060

PSU: Reliable, quiet, a bit of healthy overkill

You still have a bit of budget left for whatever other expansion you want-- idk if you can get a worthwhile sound card for that much, I don't really know a ton about audio.

The define r5 does not have great airflow so do watch out for temps. How many fans are currently in it? The ryzen 1700x is an alright cpu for your task but you would have been better off with a ryzen 3100 or 3300x for a good bit better single core performance. Either way we can make you a decent system with those parts. Since you want to game a bit I would highly advice you to remove the cover on the side of the case and put a fan there it's gonna really like having airflow for the gpu.

For the budget left over I'd add in a side mounted fan on the sidepanel (really helps for this not so great airflow case). Also isn't the 2060 ko pretty loud due to the lesser cooler?

i believe it has a worse cooler than most 2060 cards but it uses a die from a 2080 or something which gives it strong performance in compute workloads, worst case scenario you could get an aftermarket cooler and it'd still be worth it

topics i need help on:

Spoiler

basically everything was bought used off of reddit or here, only new component was the case. absolutely nutty deals for some of these parts, ill have to tally it all up once it's "done" :D

So I went with your Motherboard choice, turns it it doesn't have an onboard wifi module. Any recommendations?
