INTEL to AMD Switchover!

I have recently bought a prebuilt cpu from bestbuy for gaming/streaming. Not 100% happy with the guts of the cpu (yeah i know! i should have just built my own from scratch).  After a few posts on this site and doing some searching i think i have landed on what i want to do, but i have some questions.

 

The current set up i have...

 

CPU  - i7-9700F @ 3.00GHz

MOBO - Gigabyte B365M DS3H

GPU - RTX 2070 Super

RAM - Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 32GB running @ 2133MHz (cant change it due to the motherboard limitations in the BIOS)

HDD - 1 TB

 

The changes i am going to make

 

CPU - Ryzen 7 3700x @ 4.4Ghz

MOBO - Gigabyte x570 Aorus Elite

GPU - RTX 2070 Super

RAM - Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 32GB

HDD - 1 TB

SSD - Samsung 970 EVO 1 TB

CPU Cooling - Noctua NH-D15

 

I've watched (and have took apart and rebuilt cpus in the past) but i've never transferred HDDs or anything from one MOBO to another, my concern is after i move everything over will windows and all that stuff still be there? My main concern would be making sure when all the hardware and stuff was all set up and ready to go and it has a successful post, i would just be able to boot it up and it would be ready to go basically. Don't want to worry about buying Windows or anything like that..

 

What would be the best route for making the switch?

technically u can just plug and run it

 

but it's generally recommended to re-install OS after major hardware upgrade (motherboard swap especially) to clear the old drivers and such to prevent it from causing issues

 

plug in your OS drive, install windows, then only plug in your other drives to prevent accidental deletion/funky partitioning error from happening

Just.... before you go and do that, what is the use case of this PC? If its gaming, for now I would just keep the 9700... if you are doing content creation and rendering, yea the Ryzen CPU would be a big upgrade. But for gaming..... the 9700 is perfectly good, hell, you won't actually gain anything going AMD.

Wasting money on the SSD get something that's more $/GB friendly. Assuming USD I recommend:

The WD Black is also a very high end NVME drive, equal to (might even be better) the 970 EVO. I run 3 of them and in my main system particularly I read/write heavily, no concerns whatsoever. Samsung drives come with the name "tax".

Huh? If you've got even moderately okay airflow this a complete non issue, and having an M.2 NVMe drive is totally worth it.

for streaming you should probably just let the gpu handle it, turing nvenc is nuts. the 3900x would make editing pretty fast although its worth noting that some video editing software is still heavily optimized for intel afaik

sata is like 5-10 bucks less than decent nvme drives, worth the upgrade imo at least for eliminating cables

Depends, for game recording you're definitely using NVENC

 

As for video editing, idk, I find my 3900x doing almost nothing because my editing software uses NVENC

Though I'm not much of a video editor myself, mostly crop and edit slightly

Good luck getting that 3700X to a stable 4.4 GHz, you're going to need it...

Best way?

1. Clone your drive using Macrium Reflect (use rescue usb for that)

2. Boot your drive on another computer.

3. Be happy using your new PC with everything already installed. And wait (about 20 years maybe) for that mythical, unspecified problems that people warning about (but never gives any examples with explanation).

 

I cloned lot of systems and change lot of hardware. My own system is cloned 3 times (changing ssd to faster and bigger) and I change basically all my hardware (CPU and motherboard included). So far 4 years or more after first (and only) installation without problem and without any reinstall. But I'm just know how it works and why it works, unlike people who recommend clean install every change.
