Will a Physically damaged CPU still work?

Probably won't hurt anything to try it. Most important is that there is not 2 pins touching in the socket or something of that nature. That's when these break hard.

OP, remove the caps that are partially broken and give it a try. You may still have a working cpu.

If the vcore fluctuates, that would be normal for this kind of damage.

Thanks buddy. I will post an update here once I try this.

So, my PC was working fine until about a week ago. But for some reason, when I powered on today it suddenly refused to boot no matter what I did. There was a power surge in my area last night but I'm always connected to a UPS so I'm assuming nothing is fried. Anyway, I digress. I thought I will try reseating the CPU to see if that would fix the problem, but I accidentally dropped it and some caps from the back of the CPU came off. Would this CPU still work? If I powered on the PC with this CPU installed will it fry other components in my system?

Thanks in advance.

Well, those are decoupling capacitors, they're smoothing out the voltage supplied by the motherboard to the cpu and they're important when the cpu jumps from very low power consumption to very high power consumption (ex core running at 1 ghz and jumping to 3 ghz)

If you're lucky and you have good components (motherboard and psu), the cpu may be stable and not cause you any issues and work just fine.

If you're not lucky either the cpu won't start at all, or you may get some crashes in random applications or games ... and if that's the case you may still be able to use the cpu is you underclock it in bios

My other components are fairly good.

I have a cooler master v650 80+ gold PSU.

And my motherboard is an Asus ROG Strix H-370 F Gaming

Would it work long enough for me to just update the BIOS? I can't get an 8th gen processor now. None of em are in stock in India. So to get a 9th gen I have to do a BIOS flash.

PS: Thanks a lot for your quick reply.

Ouch, that's LGA 1151 so you might have fried something 'spenive. I'm not sure what those in the middle do to be perfectly honest so I couldn't tell you. Perhaps @ShrimpBrime has some insight.

Thanks for the reply buddy. I know it's an expensive mistake. I'm just hoping it works long enough for me to do a BIOS flash so that I can get a 9th gen intel CPU.

My motherboard is an Asus ROG Strix H-370 F Gaming and it needs a BIOS update to support 9th gen processors. There are no 8th gen processors in stock where I live and getting a second hand CPU is not an option for me. If I tried to do a BIOS flash, would it fry other components?

I can't even do a BIOS flash with it? Would it kill other components if I tried?😕

its either going to work or it wont.. im 99.999999% sure it wont

Keep us posted for sure.

Hey guys, I have an update for you and it ain't a good one. I installed the CPU and the system didn't even post. Looks like I'm screwed. There are no 8th gen processors available now anywhere and my bios isn't up to date for the motherboard to even support a 9th gen CPU. 😕

Ah, bummer. At least you tried.

Can you flash the board without a cpu? Some boards you can do that with.
