Chose too high refresh rate on the second monitor...

Hi I'm a new member of both the tech industry and linus media group forum, so please go easy on me if I sound like a stupid...

so I recently had an idea of connecting my laptop (compaq 510) with a second monitor just for some gamer/twitch streamer feeling... so I connected a old philips (most probably 720p) monitor to my laptop. I went to the screen resolution settings and viewed the second screen ( monitor) only. so my laptop had no visual. Then I went to the advanced option and changed the refresh rate to 120 hertz (my laptop screen only had one option:60). Instantly the monitor turned black and a box appeared that said "cannot display video. please change input to 1366by768 @60" (The second monitor does not even have the 1366by768 option). I tried to change the resolution of the second screen (monitor) from the main, laptop screen  but doesn't work.

I can extend the window to the second screen (monitor). I can duplicate it, I can choose the option "show desktop only on 1", but I cant choose "show desktop only on 2" option. If I do then The box appears again. I tried to go to safe mode and fix the resolution there but in safe mode the laptop can't detect the second screen. Oh and my OS is windows 7.

Please need urgent help or else my dad will kill me!

Did you tick "Make this my main display" when you selected display 2?

no I did not... I was afraid if I did that I could not revert back as the second screen (one with no display- monitor) would be my permanent screen then and disabling me form going back to the laptop screen.
