Will my i5-6500 bottleneck an RX 5700?

SereneMango

I want to use VR.

I won't be able to buy the card soon, but it's the budget I'm willing to spend on.

Wait for ampere and big Navi and zen 3. Save up more and consider moving to a different platform. If you couldn't a 6700/7700 will be a nice upgrade over this.

If you run workloads that aren't as CPU intensive then you may not notice much performance difference with the RX 5700 run with a better CPU, although if the workloads are equally or more CPU intensive then your i5 6500 is likely going to be a bottleneck to the RX 5700.

For more specific upgrade recommendations, what are the other specs of your system and what programs/games are you planning to run on the PC, if you get a used i7 6700/6700K/7700/7700K at a good deal then it may be a worthy upgrade, otherwise it may be worth considering upgrading to an socket AM4 motherboard (compatible B450 would be the least I would go with) and current-gen Ryzen CPU?

Hope this information post was helpful  ?,

Yes. It's slower than a Ryzen 3 3100

I'm speechless. Then again, it's been years...

In fact after researching about current CPUs, I just wanted make sure if upgrading only the GPU would be enough. The Ryzen 7 3700X looks tempting, but I don't need it badly.

Well I would love to sculpt in VR, although that can wait. It would be complementary to my main workflow on Blender (3D modeling, rigging and texturing). So it would be for games that don't require a large space irl.

I have 16GB of ram btw... I can't check the speed now, if that's relevant.

Thanks for the additional information @SereneMango, I would recommend making upgrades only that you would be able to move to a new build later without losing much if any performance due to newer launches such as adding an SSD for the boot drive at least if you don't have one already, upgrading the amount of DDR4 RAM in your system, etc. Wait to upgrade on components that are proprietary to you current system platform such as the CPU and components that you can get better of if you wait on buying such as the graphics card.
