The 7060 is a beauty. There are only three new-build Dell product lines I'd touch with my own money: Optiplexes (duh), Precision laptops and Precision desktops. Everything else can rot, but those three lines have been consistently gold almost since day one.

Ah yes, fair. In laptops though it's almost worth it to go Ryzen. Their new stuff can be found in pretty cheap units, and have tons of cores.

Though I'd advise against a laptop for a lot of Excel work, it's just a pain in the ass

Right, and I'd agree with you if it were a higher end system. I had tons of issues with my first gen Ryzen system (which, now that we're almost in 4th gen, is likely fine), but this is a basic office machine and the issues won't be as prevalent.

 

Even if he were in the US, there's far better systems that can be made for the money. System integrators will almost always be a worse value.

yes, but given it's a PC from someone less tech savvy to someone (presumably) also not tech savvy

i think the ease of mind of having a number to call and have your issue fixed is worth the mark up.

but if OP think custom build is better suited for his needs, he could go that route

I beg to differ, my schools chromebook was a lenovo 11e 3rd gen and was built like a tank no deck or screen flex.

it was running a intel celeron but that's plenty for basic web browsing and media play back

I have been using a lenovo chromebook for 4+ years they are reliable

sure the internal storage is small but I was carrying a flash drive around with me

A Lenovo Chromebook is like taking a Mazda6 and giving it a 3-cylinder Geo engine. A typical Chromebook is just a Geo. You're not really playing on the same level there.

I am just saying that a chromebook is not a bad option if your doing basic office tasks the google suite is pretty good

and I always say this performance is not always key

I bet a intel i3 2120 is plenty for what the OP's mom needs

the only thing that was a bottle neck was a 10 year old hdd in my old windows machine

People are using 2 and 4 core machines for Excel and web browsing still.  Easily a cheap Dell or HP can last 5-10 years for that kind of use.

AMD generally runs better off of dual channel memory.
