Hacking is not always illegal. (Most of the time it is) Hacking means to hack into someones computer without their permission. I've tried to hack some FB accounts, but couldn't. It's somewhat hard.It takes lots of coding.

The term "hacker" is thrown around a lot, and is often used incorrectly.

For example, i have "hacked" my phone to side-load applications. I also can "hack" hardware to do things it was not supposed to (like adding a fan-header to the back of an old GPU). Hacking itself is not bad, just like BitCoins aren't bad. However, let the media have its way and EVERYTHING is evil and must be destroyed.

Here is a breakdown of how to hack your friends laptop though, just in case your wondering:

1: Try the password "password"

2: if it dosnt work, try "monkey123"

3: If that dosnt work, your not going to guess it. Go use your own laptop.

First off there are three types of hackers, white, grey, and black hat hackers.

White hat hackers often work for corporations and test out their software, firewalls, and security measures. they then send very detailed reports to the enginiers and come up with a proper fix. White hat hackers often have a large understanding in various web, application, and operating systems. They also usually know their way around telecommunications.

Grey hat hackers are essentially the same but they might find an accessible portation to use to their own benefit, however get the issue solved after they "test" it.

Black hats are the ones you are thinking of. Their main objective is to cause as much damage, or little, to get what they want. They are very skilled in this.

Not all hackers are on computers. The earlier hackers used audio tones to phone-phreak to obtain free dialing during the first electronic switchboards. I also have a book that a guy wrote in extreme detail what they did to "hack" a slot machine in a casino to get millions and got away with it.

I've done my research on this before and have done some white hat before, so if you have more questions, just ask.

EDIT

And one more thing...

All of these hackers could have typed this whole thing 15 times faster than I did.

A very large portion of "hacking" is actually something called "Social Engineering". Essentially, it's the concept of convincing another person that you're someone else - usually an authority figure or someone that should be trusted.

Examples of of this would include someone calling, pretending to be your Internet company and claiming you have viruses that they need to "fix". Or calling a company and pretending to be IT and getting information such as a password or IP address.

Other examples include using information you learn about someone to guess their passwords, or roaming through garbage for carelessly discarded confidential info (lots of employees and people write their passwords down on post-it notes for example).

Otherwise, it's designing or using applications that exploit security weaknesses.

This is all overly simplified. If you want to know more, most technical colleges offer some form of cyber security class that goes into more detail about hacking and how to combat against it.

Well it depends what you are trying to hack. Like Google hires white hat hackers to find flaws in their software. You have to be an expert in the thing you want to hack before you explore the flaws to hack it through.

you'll want to get degree's in computer software engineering and computer security. From there you will need experience in the fields of computer programming for a few years.
