I am looking to build a PC for the sole purpose of running a minecraft server. I have never done something like this so I am looking for help. The attached image is the current build I put together. Let me know if I should change anything. I am looking to have around only 5 people on the server at one time. Modded as well.

I don't want to sound like a fanboy, but you should really consider using AMD because it is much more suited for this.

You should get Ryzen 3 3200g for 100$ and get more memory or higher speeds you don’t need a case really unless you want to. the Ryzen is a apu which means it has a gpu built in

I'd look for a ryzen 3100x for this system. But the i3 should do.

How would ryzen be better here?

Minecraft servers is mostly a single threaded task, where the 9100 is on part with the 3100(and faster than a 3200G). The 9100 also is normally cheaper than the ryzen 3 parts, and has a gpu included, saving money.

The beter upgradwe is probably a 10100, but there harder to find and boards are more epxensive

He says 5 people and some mods/ plugins

Oh I see well plugins and modded not the best you have to go different ways than spigot and bukkit and there is a lack of plugins support

Well I had the Ryzen 3 2200g and it worked great for a 400$ USD server build but the Ryzen 3 3200g is better so intel or amd?!

Yeah doing a non modded server with spigot would be the best or a modded server without plugins

the 9100 should be faster than the 3200g for almost all cpu limited tasks and is a similar price.

$300 is really expensive, I've done this sort of thing for a friend before and it would honestly be much better if you bought a Dell Optiplex and slapped 16gb RAM in there. They are reliable with good networking. You could pull this sort of thing off for like $150 no problem. How are you planning to host it? I can help you with the security side of hosting it out of your house if you send me a DM, because you run the risk of people DDOSing you if you don't protect against it properly, but again I can help you with that.

This is a very very good idea a bunch of old dells, hps, lenovo's... out there with i5's or i7's and plenty of power for 5 players.

Yeah but for that low player count get a used dell pc or something and slap some ram in it

I think you would be better off going for a service instead

I would not since many services doesn't offer mods if they do they offer some modpacks some people make their own ones not sure about OP tho

I have been thinking about going with an old Dell or Lenovo and just upgrading RAM. Do you think that would be good enough to run a lot of mods. Also, do you think it's worth it to run linux rather than windows for this? I've heard linux gives better performance.

Ya, I want to be able to make a custom modpack so I agree. All of the hosting sites I've used have been hard to get modded servers on. I'd rather host myself

Linux 100% (personal preference) as long as you have like probs 8GB ram and maybe a CPU with atleast some speed

What's the actual performance difference in terms of % difference noticeable to the one of 5 players on that server. Running windows on the server just makes it way easier because you can teamviewer into it and just operate it like a normal desktop. It's way less friction for those who aren't command line ninjas.

No there isn't a big difference but windows can use more ram sometimes and I like linux more myself

It's just fine to run Windows, you won't be seeing a noticeable performance difference and it makes the setup a lot easier. I can see why you may want to get an actual machine yourself to host it, as you have a lot more control over it. It's perfectly fine to buy a cheap Optiplex and slap a ton of cheap RAM into it. I can help you with the security side of things if you send me a DM, click on my name to go to my profile and then click the orange button that says send a message. If you are hosting yourself you want to be very careful not to get DDOSed and to protect against it properly. I know a way that you can do it for almost zero cost.

Okay, I think I might try to go with a Optiplex. Do you have any recommendations on what I should look for in the specific system? Like i3 or i5?
