UK PC BUILD - 2020 - GAMING/NO BS

Macko939

Budget (including currency): £600 / GBP

Country: UK

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: World of Warcraft, FFXIV, ocassional games such as kerbal space program etc.

Other details: I don't need any peripherals, would like to have at least 1 usb-c port, I already have an SSD so won't need that.

 Why are you upgrading?

I am currently using an old laptop with a docking station. I got somebody who wants to buy it off me for £450 and I feel like its a great deal for me.

My current laptop has a 1050 + i5 7300HQ, and it can run everything I need it for, but it can't run it very well/at high graphics + it overheats quite a bit. I always use it docked and I pretty much never use it as you would use a laptop so I figured I might as well just sell it, chip in some money and get a desktop instead.

Could you also please recommend best websites where I can buy PC parts in the UK? Preferably with quick delivery! :)

I've got a suggestion from my friend to get something along these lines, pls rate this setup:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600   /// AMD Ryzen 3400G

MOBO: MSI B450-A       ///   ASUS X570 (WiFi)

GPU: Palit (or other manufacturer if this isn't good) GTX 1660

RAM: 2x 8GB ADATA D10 Gammix

PSU: SPC Vero L3 500W

For your CPU you should go for a Ryzen 3100 or 3300X if they're available, they have much better performance for games than the 1600 or 3400G.

For your GPU usually a 1660 Super is only slightly more expensive but quite a bit better.

For your PSU I wouldn't trust a power supply from a random company get one from EVGA, Corsair, etc You can find a list ranking their quality here

PCPartPicker Part List: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/7RBpcq

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 3100 3.6 GHz Quad-Core Processor  (£100.61 @ CCL Computers)
Motherboard: MSI B450M MORTAR MAX Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard  (£94.98 @ Amazon UK)
Memory: Patriot Viper Steel 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL17 Memory  (£73.44 @ CCL Computers)
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER 6 GB OC Video Card  (£217.98 @ Technextday)
Case: Phanteks Eclipse P300A Mesh ATX Mid Tower Case  (£63.31 @ Overclockers.co.uk)
Power Supply: Corsair CX (2017) 450 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply  (£54.99 @ Amazon UK)
Total: £605.31

I'd suggest waiting a little longer for the 3300X to be restocked, as for only ~20 quid more it's more than worth it over the 3100 imo.

Also, what SSD do you currently have? If it's very old and/or DRAMless and/or uses QLC flash then I'd probably also add a new SSD on the shopping list. Something like a Kingston A2000 is a really decent option for the price, coming in around the same price as SATA SSDs, despite being NVMe.

Desktop: Intel Core i9-9900K | ASUS Strix Z390-F | G.Skill Trident Z Neo 2x16GB 3200MHz CL14 | EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER XC Ultra | Corsair RM650x | Fractal Design Define R6

Laptop: 2018 Apple MacBook Pro 13"  --  i5-8259U | 8GB LPDDR3 | 512GB NVMe

Peripherals: Leopold FC660C w/ Topre Silent 45g | Logitech MX Master 3 & Razer Basilisk X HyperSpeed | HIFIMAN HE400se & iFi ZEN DAC | Audio-Technica AT2020USB+

Display: Gigabyte G34WQC

Thank you for your reply guys. My budget isn't 100% rigid, I can spend a little bit more if I have to, if it means getting the pc now rather than in a months time lol.

I am looking for alternatives to 3300X now, is 3600 OK for my needs?

The 3600 is a great value but it's more expensive and you'll be GPU bottlenecked, it's good if you want to upgrade or do workstation tasks.

I see, thank you. I'm just trying to work around the fact that 3300X isn't available. What GPU would go well with 3600?

The 3600 can go upto a RX 5700XT or 2070 without bottlenecking, but for your budget a 1660 Super or RX 5600XT would be best

If you can fit the 3600 in your budget then that'd be a really good option.

Right now, the 3300X will be pretty much on par with the 3600 in gaming, but in the following years you'll see the 3600 take the lead easily because of having 50% more cores and threads.
