Can I upgrade my Celeron G1840 by a i5-4570 just like that?

Go to solution Solved by Haro,

First of all. Please don't link a file for us to download as no one will do that. Say the specs here. Second of all. It should work just fine. Canyon lake needs a bios update but normal haswell doesn't. So it should be fine.

Hello,

I recently noticed that I have an old CPU laying around (i5-4570) which apparently fits on the same Socket as my G1840 processor, which is build into my little office PC. We are talking about the Socket LGA1150. Since I'm not very familiar with Intel Sockets and Intel in general, I wanted to ask for some help first before I do anything stupid. I just want to switch the CPU's, that's it. I'll link the spec sheet to my machine down below, I am kinda worried that my power supply can't handle the upgrade since it's only 180W and the i5-4570 has a TDP of 84W compared to my Celeron G1820 with 53W.

I'm not sure it'll work, some BIOS are locked from OEMs to only support the CPUs that they use on the boards themselves. But saying that, it either works or it doesn't, if it doesn't just swap the g1840 back in and it should work as before.

That's an 1150 socket BTW, not 1550.

That's possible. But the spec sheet just says h81 so it's very likely that it can :D.

(But for all I know. I could be wrong lol. )

Oh yeah had a little typo, corrected
Yes I guess I'll just try. I guess if it's locked there's no easy way to unlock it, right?

Could be either way, have seen some that are locked down, and some that aren't... but as it only lists a few models on the spec sheet, and OP's isn't one of them, then I'd say it might be possible that it's locked. Doesn't hurt to try anyway.

Not unless there's a BIOS update for it... you'd be best to check for BIOS update before doing anything else.

Also, don't go and buy anything extra IMO, you can buy small systems on ebay that are from office refurbs with half decent CPUs, usually i5 4/5th gen for around £80 or so, and come with windows licence and SSD... that'd be the best way to go IMO if you need a little upgrade from the g1840.

This is a possibility. Most OEM pc doesn't need to update the bios microcode especially for newer cpu outside the current rooster.

Yeet I'll consider it if the CPU upgrade fails. I just wanted to try before buying anything new. ^^
(BIOS is on latest version btw, well at least I don't find any newer versions.)
