Can I use 2 nvme sdds with my motherboard

I have the MSI x470 Gaming Plus Max mobo and it does have 2 m.2 slots. Am I able to use two nvme drives or does one of the m.2 have to be sata?

both slots can run pcie drives, but one slot is limited to pcie gen 2 as it is running off of the chipset.

Yes, however the bottom PCIe slot will be deactivated when running an NVMe SSD in slot 2.

so would it be noticably slower? should I just get a sata m.2 or sata instead?

THe peak therotical speed would be about 20gbit instead of 40gbit

 

Still much faster than sata, and nvme has many other advantages like lower cpu overhead and can handle higher queue depths aswell.

ok and most nvme ssds dont have speeds over 20gbit anyway do they?

depends on the drive, what drive do you want to get? What are you using the drive for?

 

Most high end drive as near the limit of the 40gbit of gen 3 x4

Thats a slower drive, so you won't be limited much by the lower speeds.

also be careful the regular wd blue is actually a sata drive in a m.2 form factor its the wd blue sn550 thats the nvme drive
