Well, if you're using an X370 or B350 board (or God forbid an A320), you won't be able to upgrade to Zen 3 unfortunately, so you'd be limited to Zen 2 (Ryzen 3000).

If you're set on upgrading just for gaming, a 3600XT (or even the regular 3600) would be a decent upgrade over the 1700X and even in multi-threaded tasks it will be similar to the 1700X despite having fewer cores because of the much better single-core performance.

What board ?

And what's your budget?

If your running 300 series boards. Zen 2 is the maximum supported cpu lineup for these board.  If your running anything higher

And your satisfied with the current performance or you can wait. Then wait.

My board is mini itx b450 aorus , id ideally like to stick with 8 cores as next gen consoles are getting that and I want to be able to hold onto my next chip for at least 2 to 3 years , I’ve thought about the 3600 but feel like 8 cores is the best decision

3600/XT will still be an improvement and games won't actually utilize more than 6 cores for a long time I would assume

As I said. If your satisfied with the current performance then wait for zen 3.

Like others have said, wait for Zen 3 (Ryzen 4000 Series) -- Your board has a good chance of supporting those CPUs and they'll be a huge increase in performance.

The 4700 (X) would be a really nice upgrade.

That’s what I’d like to wait for but all these companies are releasing no information on time line of release

I'd assume that AMD won't want to miss the holiday season, so I'd wager that Zen3 is announced in late august / early sept, and then is released maybe sept/oct?

This is all speculation, but given that you already have a pretty good CPU, you can probably afford to wait a few months.

Yea , I’m definitely not in a rush or hurry to upgrade as my current cpu gets the job drone, but it would be nice to get a new cpu and possibly a 280hz monitor that I’ve had my eye on
