PC shuts off 2 seconds after turning on

FloRolf

Hello there!

Sooo I think I've killed my PSU but I am not entirely sure, and ofc my PSU tester is gone.

Here's what I've done:

I build another PC which doesn't have a PSU yet, so I used the one from an existing PC (Corsair CX500M) but I only pulled the cables towards the other PC and didn't uninstall it because lazy.

That worked fine, second PC booted just fine etc.

Now I let that sit for like 2 weeks, again because of lazy, and just plugged everything back into the initial PC and now: boom, nothing works.

When I press the power button, fans start spinning and some mobo LED's turn on and then it quickly dies only to retry again 5-10 seconds later.

What I've tried:

- unplug/uninstall everything unnecessary, like GPU, SSD, network card, ODDs

- switch ram slots/only one dimm

- different power outlet

- remove cmos battery for a bit

- replug everything like 3x

Specs:

I5 2500K

Z68XP UD4

Corsair CX500M

16gb ddr3 1866

Gtx1050Ti

Samsung 850 evo

Any ideas here?

Try resetting CMOS and moving around the memory sticks, ideally trying them out one by one in each DIMM slot on the board.

I wouldn't bet against the PSU being the culprit though - the CX500M is oold, and it wasn't particularly great even back when it released.

seconding, this is typical behaviour of a system that's trying to POST but can't

Alright, just reset CMOS again and nothing happened BUT I just uninstalled all the ram and now it at least stays on and gives a continuous beep code.

Edit:

According to the manual

Quote

Continuous short beeps: Power error

I am not sure why this only occurs when there's no ram but it seems to be PSU eh?

gigabyte board right? all 3 of mine beep like fuck when there's no memory in, but, if that's what the beep code chart says for it then it's the most convincing lead to go on really.

did you go straight for removing all the ram or did you try it with one stick?

have you got another psu you could throw on temporarily?

Initial I had 4 modules but I removed 2 to put into the newly build machine so right now I only have 2 of the same sticks.

I tried the following configurations without any result:

- Both dimms in initial slots

- dimm 1 in other slots (A instead of B)

- dimm 2 in other slots

Sadly no other PSU and I don't want to destroy other existing PC's again :P

guess from personal experience: check the pins on the 24-pin connector, they tend to wear out a bit and make bad connection, you can squeeze them together a bit again using a sim removal tool.

pretty much rules memory out then. as a sanity check, try reseating the CPU as it's cheaper than buying another PSU and finding out the problem is persistant. you might want to clean the LGA pads off with some isopropyl just incase there's a bit of guck on it

Well I mean I haven't touched the cpu or cooler for over 3 years so I don't think that's the issue.

Just tried this and didn't do anything but I've tried the paperclip method and the PSU turns on and stays on just fine.

What other options do you have at this time @FloRolf? Reseating a CPU is probably not a bad idea, but I could be wrong...

Well, I just tried the PSU with a different system and it is working just fine...

Then I guess it's either the CPU or motherboard now, which is quite unfortunate.

I'll try reseating next then, but I don't have much hope because, like I said, it hasn't been moved in ages.

@manikyath @yaboistar @Mateyyy

Update 1:

reseating the CPU didn't do sh#t.

I think I have a different LGA1155 CPU around that I will now try instead to finally narrow it down to the board, which I'm pretty sure is the issue.

Update 2:

New CPU, Same issue.

This motherboard has been with me since Day 1 and now he's gone. Rest in Peace brother :(

Unfortunately finding a replacement 1155 board will be quite difficult to the point where I should replace the entire thing probably.

Update 3: the board makes some kind of click clack noise and I'm not sure if it has been there from the beginning or just now appeared.
