AMD FX 4300

Is AMD FX 4300 a good cpu? I bought a good cooler for it because a friend told me that it needs better cooling. Why is that? Why is it that the FX needs "special" cooling but other intel cpus don't.

Well, it's hard to answer such question.

It's quite an old cpu, so it's very slow compared to current processors, so from this point of view it would be bad.

It was also a bit slower than Intel processors when it was launched, but it was much cheaper ... so if you were on a budget it was a good cpu.

 

A better cooler was unlikely to improve the performance of the system unless the cpu was overheating.

As it's a socket AM3 cpu, you could probably upgrade but AM3 processors for some weird reason are still fairly expensive for the little performance jump they'd offer so it's not worth it.

Owned an FX-4100, was a pile of shit. That being said, an FX-4300 will run on most mediocre coolers; it's not that hot of a chip, especially compared to any of the 8 cores.

The FX line up suffered from, terrible performance due to its small cache compared to a large core count, games during that time were terribly optimized for more cores, and it had really bad IPC compared to Intel during that time. I use to get decent performance out a heavily overclocked FX 8450 like 3-4 years ago but now its straight garbage.

Well, yeah, but then you'd also have to upgrade the motherboard and memory.

 

It's worth buying a 50$ Ryzen 1200 or a 3000g and a 50-60$ A320 based motherboard and 8-16 GB of DDR4 for around 30$ ... so for $150 you'd get a really good upgrade

but I already have an AM3+ motherbord with the fx 4300 so I would have to buy a new motherboard, new processor, new ram etc. What fps will I be working with in low settings in games like apex legends etc.

Did you try looking at one of the countless YouTube videos?

It will be fairly weak ... and will hold back modern video cards so really hard to say how much fps you'll get as it depends on the video card also.

Problem is like I said, it's almost not worth upgrading the processor to something better because even with the upgrade, the performance will still suck.

You could probably sell the motherboard+cpu+ram as a kit for something like 80-100$ and then you could buy socket AM4 solution for something like 150$ ... so instead of paying 50$ on eBay for something like a FX8300 or FX 8350 , you would add maybe 70-80$ to the amount you'd get for the mobo-cpu-ram kit and get 2-3x the performance.

 

People would be willing to buy your mobo-cpu-ram kit if the price is good, because they can be used for windows xp machines, or for home servers or whatever, so you'd find buyers if the price is right.

i don't have the budget for an am4 motherboard and parts that it supports, that's why I am using am3+

The gAme won't even run at 30fps with the equivalent of an i5 750....

A quad-core FX is fine for light games and standard computing but anything heavy you better get a FX-8 core or a Ryzen 3 3100 if budget allows. (had a Athlon X4 880K very much same chip it did not do well in Battlefield 5 but decently enough for Battlefield 1)

Hm, I mean granted I don't accurately know how the IPC of Nehalem compares to AMD's Bulldozer, so I could be wrong.

Compared to Sandy Bridge though, yeah, a 2500K definitely smokes the 4300.

Yeah Piledriver(FX-4300, FX-6300 & FX-8300) had comparable IPC to the Phenom II series but with modern instruction and lower power consumption at the very least its a upgrade. Bulldozer(FX-4100, FX-6100 & FX-8100) was a dowgrade and had if memory serves me right barely improved power consumption and worse IPC meaning if you wanted to get equal performance you had to OC the damn chip and toss effiency out the window so what was the point in the first place?

yea well for some reason the FX processors are still expensive even tho they are pretty much bad. Can anyone tell me what is the best processor that you can buy for AM3+

The "best" is relative. See Socket AM3+ performance

You could buy a fx-9590 but it will probably kill your motherboard with the monster power consumption, and you'd need a powerful cooler / water block so when you draw the line, for the amount of money you pay for everything versus the performance, it's not the best.

The best performance for money now would probably be fx-8300 and fx-6300 as these were probably the most sold so they're in available in bigger quantities.

The one good thing about FX processors was/is the very long pipelines. This is what enabled high frequency overclocking on this chips. Totally not voltage restricted in any way, and perfectly capable of clocking way way up there. 

 

These chips need to run cool. 61c core temp max isn't exactly easy to accomplish on a high OC'ed FX 8 core processor. Best bet was to clock on ambient cooling some 4.8-5.1ghz seemed pretty normal if the cooing could handle it.

 

I think a 4300FX would be kinda weak for todays use, be better to have a FX8350 or something of the sort if the budget is tight. 

 

Later when you upgrade, slap the mofo under some Dice or LN2 and really bang out some clocks.

If its not a high end board my advice is do not go beyond FX-6300 if it is a high end board go ahead and grab a FX-8300 or 8350.

I'd try and find a 1090T if it where a higher end board. WIll have higher IPC over FX and 6 cores will do what 8 cores can do. 

 

But this platform is so old..... It's really hard to recommend anything logical.

 

I mean my Athlon 220GE would be faster than a FX-4300 and it'll even have onboard Vega Graphics (3core). Figure maybe around 150$ get a 220ge, cheap ass board and a stick of memory and just be better off on a lot of different fronts including faster USB and Sata ports.
